You wake up, drag your sleeping body parts out of bed, take a shower, start to feel almost human again, eat some breakfast (instant coffee and leftover noodles),
brush your teeth, get dressed. You turn on the TV to check the morning news, but there's only static on. You make a mental note to call a repairman (later) and
set off for work/school/drinking cheap wine in a park/whatever applies. You step out on the street, ready for another glorious day.
You immediately sense that something is wrong. You check your watch: 8.30 AM. But where is everybody? There are no people anywhere! The streets are crowded with
empty cars, some of them still with the engine running. A bird chirps somewhere, which only helps to emphasize the spookiness of it all.
There's only one explanation. The world is empty.
"Oh no", you groan to yourself. "Not this tired old last-person-on-earth bullsh*t nightmare-come-true!". You go back home, annoyed with a universe that has
completely lost it's ability to hit you with something original. The TV still shows nothing but static. The radio is making squeaking noises. The phone is dead.
You are Joe's complete lack of surprise.
Something that does surprise you, however, is what happens when you turn on the computer. The Internet is very much alive, boiling with twisted conspiracy theories,
holy flamewars and pseudo-scientific speculation about wtf is going on. Pretty much as usual, but the intensity and wierdness of it is beyond anything.
By reading your favourite online forums, you slowly realize that every person on earth (or at least every Internet junkee) have somehow been sealed off in thier own
private instance of the universe. The internet is the only channel for communicating across the worlds. After some careful pro/con considering, you decide that this
is probably a bad thing. Of course, it could be worse. You could be one of those fabled non-geeks that people keep telling you about.
And then you stumble into this thread. Now what?
