Prostitution

I opened a thread about this ages ago under a different title, but the question still stands: What is wrong with prostitution. Taking it from a completely objective standpoint, nothing. So why all the bitching from religious groups? And why do people think it's wrong?

Disease could be controlled through a liscensing system, crime has nothing to do with prostitution.

Controlled prostitution is actually less dangerous than unprotected casual sex.
Loser men like me who can''t get laid tend to get a little pyschopathic. Prostitution would help undisillusion such men.
Plus there are other arguments about protecting would be prostitutes from it, yadda yadda yadda. Course the only reason you need to protect people from it is because of the stigma in the first place.
So nope, nothing wrong with prostitution. In fact, it''s detestable that it''s illegal.

Our society is based on certain values. One of these values is family, the basic building block of civilization. This building block is currently in a very poor state (given all the divorces, single parents, etc.) The general idea is that by legalizing prostitution you hurt family values even more, which means you hurt the fabric of society.
Personally, I believe legalizing prostitution would be a constructive step for our society. However, I have to consider the message such a step would send to the population (especially its younger part), a message that mainly states it's OK to sell our bodies and it's OK to have casual sex with strangers for money. I think that if we consider legalizing prostitution, we should also consider changing our way of life and resurrecting family values and awareness of their importence. I do not want to see the state of these values get even worse then it is now.
EDIT: This is a fairly interesting topic as long as the discussion is civilized. Changing the topic name would be a start.

Taking everything from a completely objective standpoint, nothing is wrong. What is our life compared to the universe? What difference would make to the universe if a guy enters your house, kills you and rapes your familly? Nothing, I guess.
Rape and murder cause emotional and physical distress, prostitution does not.

its not illegal because ''its bad'', its illegal because women that do it hardly ever do it at will. they are either struggling with money, or forced into it.
And a possible reason that only distressed or needy people do it is because it is illegal and they are finally pushed too far. If it were available as a legal option, perhaps women (and men) would enter into it under less dire circumstances.

Its sorta like drugs. What people do with their own bodies is up to them.
However, some reason people who do that sort of stuff aren''t usually the best of people. The cleanist hooker still isn''t very clean.
Some say its a victim less crime. But ask someone whos wife got aids because some cheating husband decided to get a hooker on a business trip and passed it onto her? Its happened plenty of times.
It might not happen much, but it still happens. With it being legalized, it might help, but will it be 100%? There will still be a few who fall through the cracks. I heard it takes 3 months to know if you have AIDS after receiving it. I wonder if you can pass it along within those 3 months? I suppose its possible.
What about the cost to the taxpayers? The additional administration to issue licenses and to administer drug tests, the additional police to check licenses of the onstreet hookers, all the drug lab costs, the medical costs to treat diseases... Is it really worth it? I don''t think so.
I don''t really want my tax money paying for people out there to doink each other all day long. Theres more constructive things to spend money on.

Why would a married man in a healthy relationship have cause to solicit a prostitute? There could be a brothel next door to me, and I wouldn''t use it.

I don''t see how either position is objective... A person does not have the right to forcibly ''take'' from another. Our social contract for civil society requires you to relinquish your freedom to cause violence to others in exchange for protection from violence yourself.
The classic feminist argument, is that prostitution objectionifies women and encourages men to treat other women as less-than-human. ''Look I can just buy sex if you''re going to be a hassle''.
The neo-feminist argument is that prostitution is a women''s right, and the government has no place restricting what a women is allowed to do with her body.
The ethical issue is whether prostitution is a women''s right or privileged-freedom. As a privileged-freedom, is it acceptable for different governing bodies to restrict or regulate it in different manors. If it is deemed a right, then no government has authority to restrict it.
•Prostitution is a business
•All business is privileged freedom
⌂Prostitution is a privileged freedom
•Governments have the authority to regulate business
•Prostitution is a business
⌂Governments have the authority to regulate prostitution
•Banning is a form of regulation.
⌂Governments have the authority to ban prostitution
Prostitution is illegal in most states is because it is undesirable enterprise in most communities, but it is not illegal in Nevada.
For an interesting clash of values; consider whether it is better for a women to make a living as a prostitute, or do nothing and collect welfare (if prostitution is legal/is illegal)?
For a diabolical clash of ethics; presume it is reasonable to make welfare recipients perform some work for the compensation they receive, and presume prostitution a legal enterprise that does not require even remedial skills. Consider the severely mentally handicapped that receive welfare that do not have remedial skills. The consequence of this chain of though is vile. Intuition tells us that requiring severely mentally handicapped men & women to perform prostitution is pure evil. If we are to trust our intuition, then some premise I have assumed above must be wrong (I think it’s an unwritten assumption).

if robbery was legal, perhaps women (and men) would enter into it under less dire circumstances.
so now, instead of total bums being prostitues, maybe people that make minimum wage will become them too. great.
Whether or not it''s legal I don''t think is as important as them just being around. If we didn''t have prostitutes all those jokes about Van Buren street just wouldn''t make any sense. That would completely change my life. And imagine the world without dead hooker jokes. That would ruin at least one good Red Meat character. Then there''s Ben Aflek with his personal dead hooker joke. If you meet a hooker be sure to thank them for making the world a funnier place. Then run like hell so you don''t get shot by their pimp.
