Now how many times have you viewed this? /MindWipe [EDIT] No... I don't think "Viewn" is a word ^__^ I had such a hurry to be the first to post this, hence the spelling [/EDIT] [edited by - MindWipe on April 21, 2003 4:22:09 PM]

HOLY CRAP! I was just about to post this when I saw this thread.

Thanks, Dave!

Is "viewn" a word?

Hey, can you add a column for the "Reply-To-View" ratio? Just kidding

Interesting.

My idiotic thread, "omg teh terrorist milk" has 76 views but only 4 replies. Obviously, the sheer stupidity prompted potential posters to leave.

On the other hand, "Now doing loping and legwork" generated a reply from almost every viewer.

Thus we can tell the stupidity of the topic by this ratio. Or perhaps it represents the interest people have in the topic?

How about a Stupid-To-Smart people ratio

Yeah, exactly. We just started recording views about an hour ago, so the counts for any threads created before then are misrepresentative.

Oh, hehe. I assumed that you had always been recording them, but just now decided to show them

Great work Dave. Now we''ll just have to see what effect it will have on the community

Will you make a "Top10 viewed threads"!? O_o

I''m a little concerned about that, honestly, but we''ll see how it goes.

But how will a "Top10 viewed threads" list work? People could just reload their own threads all the time!? And that wouldn''t be good for GDnet''s bandwidth >_<

Good point. Screw that.

O_O

That would take so much more storage space/cpu time than the current method. Right now, I can store the total number of views in 4 bytes. Your way, I'd have to keep a list of every IP that had ever viewed the thread.

That would get very large very quickly... maybe you could keep track of views in the last 5 mins... and only count a view of the same IP address after the 5 min time period was up.. kind of a compromise... I do realize that you just implemented this sweet feature and we say: "Wow this is sweet! Now make it better!!!", but we can''t help ... I just think it would really be cool.

I do think that it will help show how those threads like "What''s your favorite ___________?" threads will have an equal number of views as posts because no one anctually reads them... they just post...

It will add a whole new dimention... very good!

Well, the whole reason I added the view count is that the overhead is fairly low. It wouldn't be so low if I start adding checks to make sure people aren't just upping their view count. Taking into consideration that topic.asp (where the increment is done) is the most frequently accessed page on our site, the extra overhead isn't worth it.

You''re welcome.

Sweet, it''s like a post edit every time someone views a thread. I will be really interested to see if this causes any 500 error brownouts during the next 24hrs (even with fixes, the server is still tiny compared to the load, remember the OMFG thread bogging down the server?). Well, I''ll reserve judgement and critical "I told you so" remark until we see what happens. Maybe since it''s modifying the thread table rather then the replies table it will be ok (thread table much smaller than replies table)
