When I install the directx 8.1 sdk it does not ask me if i want to install the debug dlls. Also the directx control panel is not in the control panel so I can''t change iit this way. Does anyone know why this may of happened? I have directx 9 installed and was wondering of this is the problem? Thanks in advance

Yup, I think having the DX9 [retail] runtime installed is the issue here.

You can think of the SDK as having two parts -:

1) the headers, libs, sourcecode, docs, samples etc

2) the debug runtime components

When you install the DX8.1 SDK on a machine which already has the DX9 retail runtime components installed, then only the first set of stuff (headers, libs, sourcecode, docs, samples) gets installed.

The installer for the DX8.1 debug runtime checks for any existing DX runtimes - since those are NEWER (DX9) than the version you''re trying to install it won''t install them.

Two solutions:

A) Get the DX9 SDK

B) Uninstall the DX8.1 SDK and find a way to uninstall the DX9 runtimes (there are some programs out there to do it apparently).
