Hi, What is the best way to animate a 3d object? store the key frames and calculate all the moves? or is there some other way? Thanks...

There are a few ways to do it, thats one of them, but you are better off with "skeletal animation" techniques where you interpolate(blend between) the keyframes. This way you don''t need to store EVERY frame of the animation, just certain keyframe positions, and the code will calculate the in-between frames for you.
(Check google, and don''t worry, it sounds alot harder than it actually is!)

Thanks... but any specific (with code) site about skeletal animation?

there''s not really a "best" way to do it... it depends on what you want to do with it...

keyframe animation is very easy to implement and rendering is very "cheap". -> check md2-loading & animation over at gametutorials.com

the "next step" is keyframe animation of more than one mesh mixed with some (very) simple "bones". -> md3-loading & animation" (same url)
this one''s quite close to "real" skeletal animation.

skeletal animation is done by creating a hierarchy of bone that depend on each other & attaching mesh(es) to these bones.

at last, there''s the possibility to create a skeletal hierarchy and attach a single skin to the whole skeleton. skin-vertices can be influenced by more than one bone by a certain percentage.
this one''s the most realistic-looking approach, but also the most expensive one in CPU/GPU cycles...

you''ll find a lot on google... but with some knowledge about matrices & quaternions, all that should not be too hard to figure out yourself. only the last approach (bones & skin) might be a little harder to realize... but again google will help

try looking for "weighted vertices", "skeletal animation", "..."

BTW there is a free library that does skeletal animation (and mesh LOD) for you, it''s called Cal3d, look on sourceforge if you want to use that. I haven''t tried it but I hear good things.

Real soon now ahve tutorials on loading .ms3d models, and using skeletal animation. Check it out, it''s really good. There''s also a library that you can use to import your models and animate them...
