Lockups I’m running Win98, original, and I’ve been having lockups. Everything just stopps responding, and I am forced to flick the power switch. If winamp is playing, the music goes into an eternal two or three second loop. This started happening about a month ago, perhaps once or twice a week. I just shrugged it off, and figured I had too many apps going (I’m a convicted multitasker). So I’d reboot, run Norton disk docter, etc etc. Two weeks ago, or so, it started happening daily. I got worried, and did some minor searching. Nothing came up. Two days ago it happened again, and when I rebotted I got a registry error. Windows then went into an endless loop of booting, popping up a blue screen saying that a registry problem had been spotted and fixed, then rebooting. Occasionaly it would get to the desktop, and then pop up a box saying that something was wrong with the registry and it needed to reboot. After a while I got tired of doing that, so I ignored the windows box and just started looking for answers. The only program I couldn’t get to run was Norton Systemworks. I googled, and discovered Norton could be run off of the CD so I did that. Registry problems fixed, except that I got screwed with ooooold desktop settings, and several programs needed to be re-unlocked (dreamweaver, fomine messenger, winzip). Now I just had another freeze up. I’m sick of this, for the last two weeks it’s happened two, or three times a day. I’ve got my critical stuff backed up, and have had the chance to double backup, and get some other things off. So if it totally goes down the tube I won’t loose anything but seven months worth of mozilla bookmarks (should backup those too) and a fudging lot of misc files that come in handy now and then. …Things I’ve been debating on doing… - Reformat. Even though I won’t loose any data critical, I don’t want to do this because of all the other stuff I have. However, I have somehow managed to fill my 40 gig harddrive half full with crap I never use, so perhaps this could be a good thing. . . - Dual boot with Linux I’ve wanted Linux for ages, but the machine I was going to convert to a linux box simply doesn’t work. (I wouldn't have problems running something like Dreamweaver with WinE, right?) - Ignore it Windows will probably become more and more corrupted, until I end up loosing it all together, right? Has anyone gone though the same thing here? (Note, I physically have no copy of Linux, have not the money to buy a packaged version (in debt to parents by $500 now), nor the bandwidth to download it (56k’er) so if you could mail me CD-R’s of Linux I’d be happy. (Red Hat wanted, though Mandrake sounds good too) I could arrange for a PO Box if anyone would be that kind. ) /me goes to google for additional help [edited by - Katta on April 25, 2003 2:59:39 PM] [edited by - Katta on April 25, 2003 3:00:55 PM]

i'm sure there is a sizable public library in Minnesota. Just go to their computer books section and grab a copy of "Red Hat 8.0 Bible" or such. They always have installation discs in them.
That's where i grab Linux distros from and it's completely free.

EDIT: if you're having a bunch of random errors and such, you might want to try swapping out your RAM to see if it might be the problem, especially if it's an older PC (original win98 has been around for awhile)

The Duluth public library has next to zero computer related books. Perhaps a side of a shelf, that's it. (Shelvs being ten feet tall and thirty feet long) Most of it is windows for dummies, not exactly a high ratio of computer smart people where I live.

Though, I will look into it. Perhaps mail-a-book has it.

Ah yes, and when the books do have the CD's (not often do they even have them) they're from books that belong in the ice age.

It''s a new PC, just got it five or six months ago. Win98 is simply what I had. After I bought the PC (got a bare-bones) I had no money for anything else.

oh man that really sucks.
i thought a bigger city than mine would have an even better library.
our library rocks man! We have 2 isles of shelves for computer books, yeah some are really ass old, but they get new books on a weekly basis. There is even a dedicated shelf in the new release section just for computer books
How about interlibrary loan? Where they borrow books from other librarys for you? I''ve done that a few times (mostly art books).

I suppose they don''t have an excellent movie and software section either?

Hmm, perhaps an interlibrary loan could work...

Movies at our library... heh.

If you''re looking for the origional version of Star Wars, go there. Old, classic? Go there. Decently new(within three years)? Blockbuster.

Windows 98 is an older operating system, it was designed to run as many legacy applications (from two different prior operating systems) as possible, on the slowest hardware without sacrificing features. Your likely problem is a driver, or a program(s) usage of a driver (interactions between several programs may be misusing it). If you don''t already have it put on TweakUI (free, microsoft.com, it simply exposes registry settings) and turn on the fault log. That should save information about lockups like this, most likely giving you the exe (application) and the module (likely a driver dll) where it happened. If you have the money, and your hardware isn''t Pentium 1 era then upgrade to NT based Windows. Depending on what kind of a user you are 2000 or XP should meet your needs (PRO is the prefered version, and it''s not much more expensive).

Check your RAM. Check your fans (take off the case and see if you can determine if you''re getting overheating CPUs).

Surely you can find someone around where you live that has a faster than 56k connection? I have a hard time believing someone on here is going to mail you CD-Rs of an OS, but I could be wrong.

I know this doesn''t help but: Our library rocks as well (chicago-area): a couple rows of somewhat recent DVD movies, a long long aisle of computer books (many of which are old tho), etc. I was surprised when I first moved here.

Jeff

Hardware is an AMD XP 1800+, 300 some MB of ram, etc...

dude, i truly feel for you man.
i''d lose my mind if it weren''t for my library.

they had a presentation on anime last summer, at the time they had 4 anime movies, and it went so well that they now have somewhere between 30 and 40 anime dvds and more each month

they get a new shipment of movies, including new releases, every Tuesday.

they just put in a coffee shop so you can get food and drink while you study or whatever.

damn dude, i wonder if most libraries like yours or like mine?

rypyr, I''ll check the fans, though my computer sounds like Jet as it is. The only high speed connection up here is via Satalite... $60 a month. The predomanant population would be loggers, or farmers. I live 50 miles from the nearest T1 provider, and a good 40 miles from the nearest cable provider.

However, you can run outside, scream, drive the dirt bike like there''s no tomorrow, shoot you siblings with the paintball gun, and no one calls the cops on you.

Wolfmanyoda, perhaps your library will be nice and ship my library a copy of RH 8.0 bible. Our library isn''t that bad, it has lots of new books, but the computer section is lacking substantialy.

i''m sure they can get it via interlibrary loan, and having the book for reference for awhile as you get used to the OS can''t hurt either.
Might take a few days or so to get it, but at least it will still be free.

Well, if you can back stuff up, do so, then reformat. And stop looking at old lady pr0n - God and the CIA punish you for it.

Mitchalson, TweakUI installed, and those annoying white arrows on desktop shortcuts removed. Falut log on too.

I checked my fans, nothing appears to be loose... Is there anyway I can tell how hot it gets inside there? Or would I need to get some weirdo thermometer hardware doohicky.

I think I set my BIOS to warn me when it gets to hot too, can't remember what temp it was set too though.

Wolfmanyoda, here's a link to my libraries linux section. Note, I do not recall seeing anything but the dummy book at my library, and I have looked.
Clicky!

This looks good.

w00t, it has RH 8.0 with it! But it's out for a few weeks. Hmm, I'll place a reserve on it, then go to see what kind of interlibrary support we have...

TSwitch, yeah, I know a reformat would be good, but I hate having to re-install everything. And those MS guys don''t like it when I have to get a new registration number for Frontpage (which I do use).

you could try a windows recover that won't affect installed programs.
use your boot disk to boot up with cd-rom support and pop in your win98 disc.

on the win98 disc, navagate to win98\tools\sysrec\ and execute "pcrestor" (no 'e' on the end)

i may be off on the path, it's been awhile since i used it, but it will re-install windows without affecting your data or programs.
Don't know if it will fix your problems, but it's a pretty painless option.

*grumble*

I just had a lockup. Just the usual stuff running, mozilla, word, psp, trillian, and winamp.

Except...

I can''t find the location of FAULTLOG.TXT. I did a full computer search, checked the C: drive and the windows directory...

Am I supposed to create this file? I didn''t see anything in the TweakUI help files.

*goes to check again*
