If I was considering a career in game programming would it be better to go to a specialist school like Digipen or Fullsail or get a computer science major at MIT or some other college with a good CS program?

Take some of your basic coures and get them out of the way. Take some of the first CS classes, see how you like them. Get a job/intership at a place where they do game programming, or programming or some kind. Then see if you''re still interested. I suspect that if you aren''t really passionate about programming games, you won''t enjoy it as a career, and probably won''t be successful. If you just think, "that would be neat to get to make games!", you should see how things really work in the real world, because making games isn''t all fun and games.
