Lets Make the Matrix

Anyone here want to program a MUD game about the matrix...??? It would be something like we discovered a gap between our world and the core of the matrix and in the game we would be connecting into the matrix and trying to find a way out (which doesnt exist players would be able to get out of the matrix only in the game of course and come back... its not a concrete idea yet but what do you think?
dude, maybe u should try to start from the beginning like tetris, pacman etc.
your idea is too big even for full funded multimillion company to risk.
it is recommended that u go step by step, there is nothing wrong with dreaming, but inorder to make it happens, you need to go from the basics.

MUD = text based... and uhmmm there were a few people who made a mud about THE_CROW and they had to close it down because they were using the schools server to run it.
It got about 20,000 people online everyday... and they werent top end programmers... so uhmmm im not talking about 3d shit or even 2d... getting about 100 users capability wouldn''t kill my dreams... oh and if i get 3 registered players and no more... i wouldn''t cry... so no offense but I already made pong and a tile engine in openGL :D so i want to go retro and program a MUD :D

Hello,
Saying that programming a mud is retrograding is a really bad statement. My few little apps that I have done in directx and/or openGL are nowhere as complex as I have coded my mud which is now closed. It had some extremely complex elements that most of the time are not covered as fully in graphical games just because the graphics make up for it. A mud can be a big endeavor and it definitely is much easier to get started on one. Just don''t view a mud as lesser than a graphical application. It might only output text but you can also add a few multimedia type things for your mud. (just send a special string of text which says you want to play music and the client plays that music
).
I am myself not interested in heading a mud once again. I had achieved quite a lot of success but a mud is an on-going thing. You have to manage a pretty big staff, always update the world in ways that the code often can not.
Good Luck,
- Lois

I just said retro because of graphics of course muds require more interesting programming and algorithms but you dont have to worry about graphic libraries, collision detection, alpha blending and stuff like that... And yeah i am intending to do some windowed mud with some animation in the background and some sound... And you can always program it knowing that you will be adding things to it later and maybe program it so that you can add modules instead of map files... like a new small program that runs along with the server with new features....
Software is as flexible as you want it to be... you just have to think about it

For a small project it doesn''t really matter as much but usually in software development you look at the requirements first and spent most of your time in the design phase. After that you go onto implimentation, which (in thoery) shouldn''t take that long. Adding stuff "as you go" might make the code hard to work with and maintain.
The only reason I''m saying this is because a MUD server should be able to handle lots of users and run flawlessly (more or less) while supporting all the features you set out to accomplish. I''ve never worked on one so I don''t know what methods work best but hopefully this helps a little.
Btw, sounds like a cool project. I''d help but it sounds as if the programming position is filled already :D

Actually i ran into a tool just after i posted this its called linder http://www.linder.co.za
It runs fast...
customizable
very much like a scripting language but powerfull as basic, c++ special for muds... so i think i''ll look into it for the server... but if i dont like it ill go c++ and yeah i want to program it myself cause its the whole purpose :D

Just because its a shooter and has 3d on it? NAH... waste of my time... maybe it will be cool... and maybe i''ll buy it... but that wont replace a MUD... some of the people here tend to like now a game with killer graphics that looks like real life with so freaking cool effects than a good game play and story.

A mud is a Multi-User Dungeon or Domain game. Either way, it in now way, shape or form, specifies whether it''s text based or grpahical. Ultima Online is a MUD, it''s 3d. Other MUD''s are text based, some are 2d, some are text based with still images, etc. Just because it''s a mud, doesn''t mean it''s text.
A mud is still a LARGE under-taking, because of all the players that you need to be able to support, and also coming up with an efficient way to link that many rooms + players, whilst keeping a story line, and making it fun for the user without them getting to lost, is a LOT of work, and not for the begginer programmer. Sure the n00b can get text on the screen, but can he store a list of any number of players, send packets over the internet, create a multi-threaded server, come up with an efficient method of storing rooms, actions, etc and how they are linked, as well as handle what user information is transmitted wo which users. Then you have to think about all the special case items, scripting, etc, etc that will have to go on. I''ve played a few text based muds, and most of them aren''t fun, because I got lost to quickly, and I didn''t feel like reading a book on where to go, what to do, etc.
Yeah, but I am a noob, my only programming language is Visual Basic 5 and so don''t diss me for this but, what is mud?
As for the idea, well I don''t think it will compare to Enter The Matrix but it could be good if you play it smart.

you might have it as if the matrix was a place where neo comes out with guns and kills all the agents flies and does everything he wants to do...
or perphaps you think im going to make a complete sci fi world in a MUD
well no... im going to make a MUD where things wont seem so fantasy... but as if it was a real connection between the matrix and its system...

It would be cool to view the matrix in code, as they do from the ship in the movie. I''m not exactly sure what font that is (custom or pre-existing) but it would be interesting to see. Aside from that, how are you planning on interpretting the matrix world?. Does your character just sit at a terminal all day watching code go by and patching through hardlines in order to get people "out". Or do you play an active role in trying to save humanity and go on missions/quests?. Obviously you could do either i suppose, instigating some kind class system, which would could work pretty well.
This seems a bit ambiguous to me. Could you explain it in a bit more detail?

If you put 1/10 the effort into writing your ideas about the game down and designing the layout as you did to keeping this post alive you may actualy be surprised at what kind of stuff evolves.
Just a thought but maybe put some effort into it and then come back when you''ve actualy got some kind of concept first.

Isn''t everyone getting a little off topic??? He wanted to see if anyone would like to build a game with him... not if it will work, or how hard it is or if his terminology is right... if you want to help him reply.. if not don''t...
saying that, I think it is a great idea and wouldn''t mind trying it... not sure if I have the skill set but you never know

Well
first
With this I mean something like a simulated matrix peripherals... all the connections of it at our hands and disposal to navigate around... and it is kind of like role playing...
But i don''t want the player to feel he''s playing a game, rather that he really is hacking through a system... making it a pseudo real matrix connection to our world... like if we were in it and the only way we could interact with it is some program some dude made...
So it is kind of like a real role playing game but you play a role in your own world... and in the computer... because i intend on making it as real as possible... with text :D
I also want to make a client for it that looks cool... and as you say i could also emulate the matrix... so that when the player goes idle all the text that comes out from the matrix translates into that font ... just to emulate it :D... so it could look really cool and just maybe some day someone will be able to understand it... because there would be a character or set of characters for our very own characters...
As for the programming I am using Linder ... www.linder.co.za it is very flexible, supports activex and already on its alpha state is very stable and works very good I was able to make a chatting engine with only about 6 lines of code... because its an scriptable server :D.
And I don''t mind if i get crticized that''s why i posted anyway... and if I get help with everything I would be more than happy... Currently I am looking for a windows server to run it in... but that wont matter because in a near future the Linder site will be hosting linder coded MUDS...
And face it... this is more real than a MMORPG... they are almost not doable because art takes more time than code... And also does design... while MUDS are also scriptable and with that script you change the whole LOOK and FEEL :D
I know I don''t know much of AI programming but I''m intending on making all the agents in ActiveX so I am able to run different instances of that AI and let them communicate, chase and trap...
