This proves that the government hates games. In the following article, the state of Washington is banning the sales of violent videogames to minors. More speficially, it targets games such as Grand Theft Auto that "display violent actions towards law enforcement officials." Well, I work with a police department. We went to an event near Los Angeles several months back and while we stayed in the hotel room, our advisors (the cops) were playing GTA3, running over cops, laughing about it, picking up the prostitutes, etc. The cops don''t care about it! The love it! So why the hell are these frickin @$$holes (the government) trying to end our form of entertainment? Here is the article: http://money.cnn.com/2003/04/18/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/index.htm WikedGamer

No kidding, a few years back something similar happened when some 11 year old bought Primal Rage and his mom saw the golden shower finishing move, complained, and it was pulled from all the Targets (maybe more) in Arizona (I think). I thought that''s what the rating system was for.

Give me a break. Do you also complain about laws preventing violent movies, music, etc. from being sold to minors, or is it just for the games? The only problem I have is so many people trying to use laws to raise their children for them. If you don''t want your kids seeing certain things, don''t buy those things and don''t let your kids buy them. If you don''t care, you, as an adult(I presume), can buy whatever you want. Now, if you''re minor trying to buy games your parents won''t like, then tough. Live with it.

There are plenty of other things to attack. Games shouldn''t be a primary target of politicians.

To xaxa: Yeah, our cops are cool. They''re always talking about videogames, especially GTA3. When I was watching the one cop play that night in the hotel room, he ran over about a dozen cops and was laughing hysterically at the sound effects and stuff. He would pick up the hookers, have a "good time", then run them over and call them a dumbass. lol.

LOL, that''s exactly what games are for! The one that can''t see the difference between running over hundrieds of zombies in carmageddon and driving a real car has a serious problem prior to play the game. Those games should be forbidden for some parents, lawyers, judges and politicians

The problem with this law isn''t that it''s trying to restrict the sale of violent video games to minors, but rather, that it leaves room for broad interpretation of what''s considered violent. If the law were based on the ESRB rating, it''s be a different story. They let the movie industry regulate itself, why not let us regulate ourselves?

The reason they''re going after games is because the game industry is much less well-prepared to defend itself than the movie industry, the music industry, etc. Those other industries have been defending themselves for years, and have organizations in place to deal with these kinds of issues. The game industry is pretty vulnerable, so it''s a natural target.

While I don't agree with this law and/or it's implementation (gov't always messes it up somehow), what really sucks is how desensitized everyone is. I feel it is atrocious to see all the little kids flock over to best buy and each other's houses to gun each other down, blood and guts littering the screen. You might make the argument that "it lets them vent" or "it's only entertainment" but you really can't argue that it creates a sort of sick fascination with the content therein. Most of the people here are older teenagers, adults so you're entirely biased and seeing it only from your standpoint. What about the six and seven year olds? Rationalize it in every way you can imagine, but it still stands that this is not something they should be regularly encountering during their development.

The real crime here is that parents don't feel like watching their kids so television, movies and games have to take their roles. Ironically enough for the ten seconds each week the parents might actually spend with their kids they get all upset because they realize the content of the media they themselves are providing. It's not the games, it's you as a parent who makes them accessible to your children that are the criminal.

Wow.

I find it funny that the government is trying to restrict violent games, but didnt they also spend 8 million dollars on making "Americas Army"? Whats up with that?

And that would be why most games like that are rate "M"!!! Blame the parents for letting their kids play such games.

Also, I''ve been playing video games for over 20 years and I''m not desensitized to reality, just virtuality. I hit a squirrel a little while back (couldn''t avoid it, it ran right under my wheels) and felt like crying. It always ticks me off and makes me sad to see all the dead animals on the street. I can''t stand all the murder stories on the news. I''m far from desensitized. The government needs to get it''s head out of it''s butt and look to real problems, like crime and drugs.

They''re trying to restrict the sale of violent games to minors, which is admirable. The problem is they don''t need to, if they''d let the industry police itself.

I find it funny that you all are bitching over stopping the sales of games to MINORS. they aren''t trying to end your form of entertainment, unless your cops are minors.

On the topic of cops: I find it funny that it is commonly known in my large town that on the morning of thanksgiving of 2001, four high school seniors were caught with nearly a _pound_ of weed open in their car on the side of a large grocery store. Or maybe the humor is in the fact that they were told to "pack it up" and "go" . Or maybe in the fact that as they dropped it all over the place so they had to pick it up in front of this officer and in front of anyone near the frequented store on a busy day. Or maybe in the fact that it comes up but it is always hushed by officers and school faculty.

Did I mention that the person holding the weed was the star football player for our team, and that we are one of the two schools engaged in the longest american thanksgivings day football rivalry? Yeah, there couldn't be a connection.

Funny the topics the government and our parents target.

I think it is relevant, but here is Frank Zappa''s position on the matter:

http://www.freemuse.org/03libra/countries/usa/texts/zappa28112001.htm
http://www.geocities.com/athens/acropolis/4466/

Just to avoid Bishop Pass'' enquiry as to who Frank Zappa is, for the wakarimase of foreign viewers of this forum:
Frank Zappa is one of the first shock rockers and parody artists. Notably remember for his songs which have been said to put women and men at strange positions--Zappasan would say that they are more about stupid men.

Some of his most remember songs are:
Catholic Girls: A song about Priest''s daughters being sexually wild.
Bobby Brown Goes Down: A song about the typical man in the American Dream being reduced to a sexual spastic.
Down in France: A song insulting the french.
Titties and Bear: A georgian medival drama inwhich the character makes a deal with the devil, so that the devil may puke up his ''Titties and Beer,'' which the devil absentmindly ate.
Lets Make the Water Turn Black: A song about an extremely disfunctional Family.

Indeed there is truth to that. However, sometimes parents may not have the desired control over their children. When a child is less than 12 or so and can still easily be handled by a parent, the "parents" can be at fault. When a child grows up and gets a feel for how to get away with things, parents may be completely oblivious to what is happening. For example, I (as well as 99.99% of teenage guys) have several hundred female-based images and videos on my computer. Do my parents know/Even suspect anything? Hell no. Is it their fault that I am going to pr0n? Nope. Did they not teach me "healthy" values? Sure they did. So what Im saying is a do understand why the govornment places these bans, it is just whether it is unconstitutional to do it and if the gov''t should have permission to censor people''s entertainment. (i am deathly against govornment-sponsored sensorship though, unless the media requiring sensorship is something that is truly awful/dangerous)

I agree about some of this. I once seen on Oprah (horrible show, was eating dinner, banned from the computer a while back) one unfortunate day, when I noticed that, they were complaining about kids playing violent ''disturbing games. One kid was raving (9 years old), about GTA3, and how you can kill old ladies. The parents thought that that was horrible, I thought that the mother should have been slapped around like a rag doll for letting her son play that game. Don''t ban the game to minors, make the parents do their jobs. Give your kids a spanking when they deserve it, it''s not beating, it''s dicipline.
