CD Data Extraction

I just had a friend send me some discs with some important personal files on it(backups I had sent him before I recently formatted my system) and I just received them in the mail. Upon copying the files onto my disc, one of them(sadly, one of the larger ones at 200+ megs) suddenly went from taking a few minutes to copy to a few hours. A pretty common issue with CD''s that are damaged in some way. I cleaned the disc off as there was some smudging, and the problem still remains. I''ve attempted this under both my Windows2k and *nix partitions, and both timeout and eventually give up. I''m aware of certain extraction tools such as cdparanoia that are used for audio extraction on bad CD''s, and I''m wondering if anyone can point me to such a tool. I /can/ get the disc re-sent to me, but it''d be a hassle and a timewaster. Any help would definitely be appreciated in this matter. -run - It''s a life''s work -ryan@lecherousjester.com

I know that you can get the disk resurfaced...around here local video shops do it for about 5 bucks... then the disk is as good as new.

What I usually attempt to do, is to create a .iso image on my harddisk. Just read it in with a program like CloneCD, make sure it is on 1x speed, and that it ''ignores'' errors. Wait an hour or 2/3, then make a virtual CD station (comes with CloneCD), and try to copy the file.

I wonder how they do that. I''ve seen some machine that polishes/grinds a few layers of plastic off... Not sure how ell that works.
