Not to play one.

If that wasn't an attempt to be funny, then I'm sick of these smartass one-liners. You could find something more productive to do like maybe RESPOND TO HIS POST instead of trying to look too-cool for MUDs...they happen to be great in my opinion and if you don't like them, leave that to a different thread. He asked "what would you suggest?" as in which MUDs, not "do you think I should attempt to play a MUD?"...yeesh...learn some oberservation skills, manners too...anyways OctDev...I highly suggest 3 Kingdoms (http://www.3k.org/) as a starter. Its been around a long while and will definitely show you what MUDs are all about.

one public one I know of is RetroMud.org (port 3000).

Although.. google is your friend.

Do not meddle in the affairs of moderators, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

Mud Connector has the largest number of MUD listings that I know of. If you have a specific category you are interested in, choose the "Category Listings" at the right. I prefer Wheel of Time based MUDs myself.
The guy who invented the first wheel was an idiot. The guy who invented the other three, he was the genius.

Used to be a regular on Dragon''s Fang way back in the day...ahh, the days of roleplaying an Asha''man losing his grip on reality.

I used to MUD quite a bit. Stated early on with Shadowdale, moved on for a long time to AstroMUD, got fed up there and moved on to building for a few never-took-off projects. Played a couple of Godwars varients for a while, then Dragon''s Fang for a long time, paired that with quite some time spent on Aliens vs. Predator. And then somewhere in there I got distracted and stopped playing totally. This was all almost three years ago, though. Last I checked a few months back, MUDs had lost most of their population, and had become wastelands of maybe 3-4 people on at any given time, compared to the 14-20 I was always used to.
Which is sad.

Gemstone III is, IMHO, the best ever! But it costs $9 a month. Imagine that, a text MUD actually CHARGING people to play! I mean, this is 2003! And they''re charging people to play a text MUD for the same price as a 3D MMORPG! You KNOW it''s gotta be good!
I like the DARK layout!

Realms of Despair is quite popular, and starts you out fairly slow. You have a choice of many races, and classes, and lots of people play it, up into the hundreds at times. Anyway, give it a check out.

Its still sad how back in the day you could find a couple thousand players in a MUD. They were HUGE too. Now, its "lots of people play it, up into the hundreds at times." And they have to be so SMALL or else you wouldn''t ever come into contact with anyone.

We oughta make a GameDev MUD! Well, at least one that isn''t secret.

Lol... that, or they realise that some people haven''t caught up to the 00''s and will actually PAY that!

I used to implement on a Circle 2.2 back in the day (95''). I think one of my old partners is still keeping it up- AugMUD. I tried my hand at writing a C++ version from scratch around 98''... please don''t laugh. I had all db in place, socket handling, combat routines, spec proc and a ternary-tree based command parser, when I lost everything to a hd crash. @#$%@#$ Trojans.
