Just finished the newest Robert J. Sawyer book Humans. It was good, not as good as some of his past writings though. I was just wondering if anyone has any GOOD Science Fiction books they'd like to recommend. I mean GOOOD GOOOD books. The ones you would read multiple times just because there is no other book as good as it (LOTR falls into this catagory). Also, say why you liked it so much. [EDIT] "LOTR falls INTO this catagory" instead of "LOTR falls IN this catagory"

Demon Princes and Planet of Adventure and Showboat World, all by Vance, are always worth rereading. They get better with every reading.

Other good books (although I haven''t necessarily been inspired to reread them) are Ender''s Game by Card and Hyperion by Simmons.

I''ve read Niven''s Ringworld twice.

the entire "Ender''s" series is excellent; as is Asimov''s Foundation novels. The first few Dune books are exceptional (although the end of the series is rather repetitious and boring). The various "Space Odyssey" books by Arthur C. Clarke are very intriguing.

A little known (two book) series, Empyrion, by Stephen Lawhead, is pretty cool. check it out.

yeah, 2001 was a very good book.

I don''t know what you consider Sci-Fi, but you mentioned LOTR so I''ll mention "The Runelords" by David Farland. VERY good fantasy set in a unique world not really based on JRR.

The Foundation serie. The 7 books written by Asimov are my favorite SciFi books, but I have alot of other books I read over and over again.

PS: I don''t think you can count LOTR as SciFi. I think it falls in the category Fantasy.

I'll second the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. I just recently read the latest book in the series (Shadow Puppets) and its just as good as all the others (Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind, then the other half - Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hedgemon, and Shadow Puppet {listed in chronological order, though the second half starts at the same time as the first half but from the perspective of a different character in the story}).

I feel bad that I had to look at the backs of the books to figure out he order, but the story blends together so well its hard to remeber where each book starts and ends.

What is so absolutely pathetic is I made the exact same recommendations in that thread to the same OP, and he didn''t follow my advice then, so one would wonder if he''ll follow my advice this time.

heh... I just went out and bought Dune and Foundation , came home, and you posted this.

[EDIT] Yes, I agree LOTR isn't Sci Fi, but it is a book that you would read countless times.

I personally never recommended Dune and Foundation. How come you didn''t come home with Demon Princes and Planet of Adventure?

I don''t know.... I asked the clerk and he said he had never heard of them. He recommended Dune, I wanted Foundation. So many people are talking about Planet of Adventure... I''ll definately get that next (if I don''t get it now )....

Get some Vinge! A Deepness in the Sky is a good space opera. A Fire Upon the Deep is swell too.

Most any one person is likely not going to be aware of all good books.

I followed your advice to read Demon Princes and Ender''s Game and enjoyed both immensely. I am now reading Hyperion (although the finals slowed me down a lot) and I also bought Year Zero. So don''t worry, your advice is not gone to waste

Thank heavens. Yeah, I know you read Demon Princes and you said you liked it. You'll like Planet of Adventure as well, and when you really get into the rhythm of Vance's fiendishly devilish characters and their antics, you'll enjoy Showboat World . Actually, Planet of Adventure is pretty much a nonstop charade of chicanery enacted by thieves, knaves and popinjays as well.

Yes, Planet of Adventure is next on my list. I just have to finish the books I already bought (Hyperion, Year Zero, Day of the Jackall and the first book in th eWheel of Time series). Since summer''s coming up and I''ll have a lot of free time, I''m sure I''ll be done with Planet of Adventure by the time fall semester starts.

When you read Vance, savor the text, dialogue and descriptions, and have a dictionary handy.

Yes, I heard that the Wheel of Time series was amazing too.

bishop_pass: Since you have been so kind to have recommended all these books, I'm recommending Robert J. Sawyer's Calculating God.

Yes, you could say I'm an RJ Sawyer freak.

[EDIT] So, here's my list (no particular order):
- Hyperion
- The Foundation Series
- Planet of Adventure
- Ender's Game
- The Wheel of Time Series
- Demon Princes
- Showboat World

Also: A Prayer for Owen Meany (heard it was good)
