Okay, I hope someone here can help me, ''cause I''m baffled. My computer sometimes shuts down. I''m running Windows 2000, and during browsing or looking in Explorer, my screens suddenly turn black, and power shuts down. It used to be randomly (allthough never in games), but now I can reproduce it with Baldurs Gate (the first game). I start the game, try to make a character, and after a minute or two, my computer shuts down. My graphics card doesn''t overheat (asus Geforce 4 TI 4200), my CPU doesn''t overheat (AMD XP 1700+ at 56 degrees). Now, after two shutdowns straight after starting BG, I decided to clock my CPU down. I went from 1466mhz to 1100mhz. However, now when my computer starts up it says she can''t see the keyboard ("Press F1 to continue..." I press F1, and it continues O_o). And Windows 2000 hangs during booting. When I put it back at 1466, it works again. This is also a problem that I happens every time I do this. Does this ring a bell for anyone...?

Are you sure that heat is not a problem? I know a guy whose computer shuts down at approx. 47 deg C.

[EDIT]
His specs:
AthlonXP 2100+@2200MHz AIUCB | 230fsb | Volcano11 | 2x256MB Twinmos /Winbond PC3200 Dual DDR| Geforce2 GTS@275/400MHz (CPU fan) | EP-8RDA+ A3, A3 | Antec 400W | 1,90V Vdd modd |

For crying out loud, she has fishes coming out of her head on either side. How can you find this hot?!

My processor doesn''t notably get warmer. It isn''t even doing more then 10% when it shuts down! And I can easily get it to 70 degrees and a 100% percent load without it shutting down. But when it''s at a low load and low temperature, the computer stops...

Okay, kitty:
Windows 2000 has this thing for restarting the computer if an unrecoverable error occurs instead of showing you a blue screen. It''s in the Setup and Recovery part of System Properties.

I had this kind of crash problem with my hard disks too, it might not be the CPU overheating, but another component.
Or if your system screws up at other clock rates, it could even be your mother board.

Well, my Win2K doesn''t reboot at errors (I disabled that function). Also, it doesn''t reboot at all, it literally shuts down. *poof*, power disabled :S

My comp used to do that too. I replaced the power cable, and it went back to normal again. I''m quite curious on how a perfectly normal power cable could get screwed up like that without someone even touching it...

Might be a small short somewhere along the line, my laptop had a nasty habit of dying like this whenever the jack for the wall plug jiggled a bit too much. Trying opening it up and making sure that nothing's too loose.

[Edit: of course too, what with being reproducable it's most likely something to do with a part in use. I'm just stupid. Make sure your RAM additions (if any) are secure, check for any bruised or broken lines on the board itself, and of course look for whatever microsoft might have on your particular issue.]

This certainly does, I had the same graphics card as you and any games I tried to play would make it switch the monitor off and restart. I posted my problem here infact. I couldnt find a solution so I took the card back and got a radeon instead, no problems so far.

But it worked perfectly for a long while... it also works perfectly under new games like Generals and Vietcong. It worked for half a year almost O_o

And that still doesn''t explain why the computer DOES boot at 1466 mhz, and DOESN''T boot at 1100 mhz. 1100 simply being my motherboard being at 100hz instead of 133.

Does not compute! Do you mean that you set your FSB to 100MHz instead of 133?

Aye, 100 mhz. And strange enough, now my computer DOES boot when I put it at 100mhz. Don''t know why :S And I found out that for some reason my BIOS was back at "shutdown" for overheating. So it might just be my processor...

You wouldn''t have bittorent by any chance would you?

I know some Windows users with the same problem due to program conflicts with bittorent.

It reboots their computer out of the blue, and sometimes makes it unable to detect certain things (keyboard, mouse, etc.) but they are strangely in good working order.
