Dunno if this should be here or the lounge, but the longe seems to be taken over with Matrix at the moment.. I have a dillema - basically i have to choose between going back to uni next year and doing 1 more year (for a BSc) vs going back for 2 more (for the MComp). This is all ontop of what will soon be 3 years at uni. Switching either way isn''t a problem, just as longs as i can make my mind up in the next week.. Anyone have any info on how much difference this would actually make? While the MComp would be nice, I don''t know anyone whos actually staying for the extra year, and frankly uni (and formal education in general) is starting to drag after so many years. Opinions? Especially from anyone who''s already made a choice either way (UK uni by the way, i have no idea how this works in other countries). Thanks

I did a BEng and have friends finishing their MEng now. We did the same thing, but I get paid to work on projects. My friends are paying the school to do projects.

I think BSc + 1 year experience is better than MComp + no experience.

You could always go back to school if you liked.

I think it depends alot on where you BSc is from. In Denmark B.Sc degrees are rumored to be mostly useless(in that you cant get a job etc) but it might be different in the UK.

I think you should go with what you feel is best. If you dont want the extra year, then you probably wont learn anything, and get lousy grades, in which case youd probably be better of with some real experience. On the other hand if you like studying then i would go the extra year.

Doesnt the uni has some councellors or something to talk to?

Why does this MB allow these retard AP's to post? I mean it won't filter the ambitous ones who want to register to do so, but it'd get rid of the worst of them...

Not taking you seriously though AP, just annoyed with the general state of these boards...

And of course to satisfy contributing something to the thread, I have a BSc in Comp Sci and it's ok and I can easily get a job with it, but once my loans are paid and assuming I don't have any other major obligations st the time (ie in about a year) I will likely go back to school for a masters or PhD just because I LOVE computer science. Don't much care for most of the programming though, which is probably why I like C# and java so much LOL.

I''ve seen a number of job openings that require a Masters in Computer Science. I''d say go for the Masters if you can. If you really need the money though, you might just get the Bachelor degree first; You can then get some work experience and money before going back for the Masters.

I work at this place where only about 25% of the programmers have computer science degrees. Everyone else has passed a logic test and been thru a 5 month long ''programming bootcamp''. People who have masters work alongside people with BS in psychology. Theres one guy on my floor who has a phD in Chemistry. We do COBOL and JCL on a gigantic IBM os/390 system (about 40 mainframes). It takes a few years just to learn your way around this system. Knowing how to calculate the O(n) efficiency of an algorithm doesn''t help you here, nor does coding a linked list. But the pay is quite nice.
