Good day! I have been given an assignment for work that I am unsure how to approach. I am to take a custom board built here at work and transfer data from it to Windows, and vice versa, via USB 1.x. My boss wants me to "trick" Windows into thinking that it is looking at a generic Flash memory stick, or something of the same nature. Does anyone have any good reference sites for such a task? I have never before worked on this low a level , and I am slightly overwhelmed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! ~del

You probably need to make sure that the custom board can act as a ''mass storage device''. Later versions of Windows have built in drivers for these and Win98 SE can have them installed easily enough. The problem is that you''re gonna have to implement the USB client side stuff on the device somewhere. The easiest way is probably to have a tiny version of Linux on there, but that would probably be considered wasteful by proper manufacturers who might handle all the file requests in firmware.

There are at least 2 ''bibles'' of USB development; one is called USB Complete, I believe, and the other is USB Design By Example. Each book covers some topics well and others poorly. Get your employer to buy these books if they take the subject seriously (and don''t already own them). Between them, you should be able to find out 95% of what you need to develop custom USB peripherals, although I don''t know whether you will find details of client-side mass storage drivers.
