Every upcoming game seems to use Havok''s physics engine !? Half-Life 2 DeusEx 2 Max Payne 2 Thief 3 Starcraft: Ghost etc. In this area I must give credits to DoomIII. So far... I agree it''s a good idea saving time and money, but, soon all games use the same physics engine. Isn''t that a bit dull? Comments? /MindWipe

Well, all of the games that use the Havok engine will customize it, probably quite a lot. So you probably won''t be able to tell that they''re all using the same engine.

Half-Life 2 uses a modified version of Havok.

But the reason they use it is because it is quite good. I don''t think it''s "dull", because it''s less visible than graphics.

Damn it must be good. I just looked at their falling stuntmen demo. I''ve never seen anything so hilarious. My roomates and I were rolling on the floor over it.

Dull? I don''t follow how you came to that conclusion.

Most games these days have similar physics. Their game worlds exhibit gravity, acceleration/deceleration, the presence of forces... so isn''t it inevitable that a common solution would arise? Havok is just a library for implementing those concepts in code. Each game probably changes the numbers around to affect gravity and so on, but... dull?

If you bought a game specifically because it has a good physics engine, you''ve got your priorities wrong...

I''d rather have a whole load of games with stable, fast physics systems bought from a well-known third party, than something they''ve developed in-house under extreme time constraints. They should be spending time on game content, not physics.

And you can tell that Doom III doesn''t use Havok either. Watch the trailer, and you can see a monster jump through the air at the player, only to get shot with presumably a shotgun, stop all forward movement, and drop like a rock at the point of impact. Very realistic...

Heh. Even VibeForce is using Havoc. Then again, the only real reason we use it is because we are lazy. They were willing to give us Havoc, and Havoc works perfectly with NI, so we use Havoc. I suppose it''s like that for those other games as well; it''s easy to implement, and looks cool. Good enough for us ^_^

Okey... maybe dull is a bit off. But still, they will all act the same... But then again, the real world acts the same everywhere.

Well, point being that I admire gamedevelopers more who do everthing on their own. Although that''s something you won''t find alot now-a-days.

I was wrong, I admit defeat.

And about DoomIII, if you look at Havok''s site and read under clients, you won''t find ID Software there.
