In my highschool humanities class, we are currently talking about the industrial revolution, and its effects. One of the issues we have been talking about is communism. We were recently presented with this statement / question (paraphrased), and we have to write an essay on it: You must choose between communism and capitalism for your new country; after you make your decision, you will immediately die and "respawn" as a random person within that system It''s kind of an interesting question, and makes you think. Do you play it safe with communism, or try and risk it all, to respawn in a good place in capitalism? I thought it was kind of amusing, just because of all the funny communist stuff on Gamedev, but almost every group I''ve talked to has chosen communuism (my group included, after some debate)... kind of interesting, seeing as how we live in a capitalist society. I think warning bells would be going off if I were in the government Students starting to pick Communism over Capitalism, what''s the world coming to? Any thoughts? Peon

It is a subliminal message. If you choose, you die.

Communism is good for a starting country, distribute equally until it gets going, then maybe implement something later. If you have capitalism, monopolies could form very quickly and only those few would survive, and the rest of your country would die. This is all hypothetical of course.

I think it''s quite funny how many people are scared of communism without knowing anything about it. When I told a teacher that I thought it would be better if the teachers could use a common system for some things, he got really upset and said something like: "What?! That is TOTALLY impossible! We don''t live in a communist dictatorship, now do we?!"

Play it _safe_ in Communism? Answer that you pick Capitalism, because you are afraid that, given the bloody history of Communism, you'd offend many people by choosing otherwise (just as you would by picking say Nazism over Capitalism).

If you still want to write the essay your teacher wants to hear, make the choice between Capitalism and Socialism. (Then pick Capitalism, because since both Nazism and Communisms are offsprings of Socialism, Socialism can't be all that healthy )

You, my friend, are offending me by even comparing Communism and Nazism. You mention the bloody history of Communism - allow me to mention the bloody history of christianity. This post just shows that you don''t know what you''re talking about.

No communism has ever gotten past the so called proletarian dictatorship, so obviously if a person or party is given dictatorial powers over a country they either become corrupted or assasinated and replaced by others who are, like what happened in Russia.

You would seemingly be as equal and as rich as the next guy. You will get as much money as the next guy to buy the central-planned products in warehouse 47. There will be no reason for your countries factories to be competative so you will drive around in a rusty T-ford as everyone else and 90% of the population will be employed in the industry as mindless drones who stand by the production lines and hammer on metal for 10 hours a day like they did in 19th century England.

Sooner or later people will exploit the system because they get as much money sitting at home at their fat asses doing nothing and the economy will go to hell.

In a utopic communism (according to Marx and Engels) there will be no central state but society will be split up in small worker communes were all people are equal and have equal votes in decisions.

But since the system promotes dictatorship you will be given three ballots at election day to vote for communist party red, crimson or wine-red.

While the rest of the world employs free-trade and enjoys freedom of choice and liberties like freedom of speech and press the communist country will stagnate and no development will happen because there is nothing to gain in that country for being inventive or trying to do something better than someone else.

That''s why i don''t get all these neo-communists, in my school there''s a lot of people who walk around with CCCP shirts with the cross and hammer because it seems it''s the recent hip thing.
I mean, if i came to school wearing a shirt that said Nazi-Germany and sported a swastika i would get the crap beaten out of me. Obviously i''m not defending nazism, but communism has murdered more people than nazism ever did.

I just wish that all these damn leftists would get their facts straight so i wouldn''t have to cry at their ignorance every time they open their mouth.

Case in point Valderman: Guess why people are scared of communism, if it''s so great go to China and where people get executed the same day that they are convicted and to add insult to injury their families are forced to pay for the bullet used.

Eskhan, don''t pretend that all dictatorships are communistic - they aren''t. I agree that all (so called) communist countries so far are/were teh suck, but actually, there is nothing in Communism which describes how a country should be governed. Free trade (and capitalism in general) promotes inequality. It makes the rich richer and the poor poorer, at least as long as the rich countries/corporations act the way they do today.

Chile: Ok i''m guessing here up to 10 000 people killed and abducted. This is of course horrible. but capitalism is one of the driving forces of democracy because it is benificial for bussiness to live in a free and safe country.

Russia: 50 million people killed by communism

Kambodja: Red Khmers killed about 4 million people.

China: Murdering rioting students at Tianmen square (Himmelska fridens torg). Invading tibet. Executing dissidents. etc. etc.

The list of communisms crimes could go on forever. in comparison crimes commited under capitalism aren''t even a drop in the ocean in comparison to the suffering communism has caused.

Go to capitalist countries in Middle East, Africa. Look at India. Read the history of all the countries of the capitalist 3rd world, and then come and tell me who killed more people than Hitler.

The only thing I will never like about communism is the lack of freedom of speach, choice and prived property. That's why I'll stay with capitalism until there are no more air to breath, or more food to eat.

LOL!

Saying that "communism is responsible for suffering" is just plain stupid.

[sarcasm]I hereby claim that Christianity is responsaible for a fuckload of suffering! Therefore, all christian countries are evil![/sarcasm]

I predict the closing of this "my ideology is bettar than yours" thread in the near future...

The lack of freedom of speech and freedom is not inherent in Communism. The lack of private property should IMO be interpreted as "big-ass corporations, begone", and not as "what used to be your toothbrush is now public property".

Yes, I''m talking about the communism we have seen, not the one we would like to see.

Free trade is what has made all countries that employ it grow so much and become so rich. From the end of 2nd world war Europe and USA has had the fastest development in history. Why?

Because after the war the leaders of the countries agreed to make trade easier by removing obstacles. While the closed economies of the east stagnated becuase of centrally-planned economy and closed borders western economy flourished. This has made not only the rich people rich but all people. Just compare us swedes to those who live in poland or Estonia. When the wall was torn down in ''91 it was estimated that the people living in SSSR had the living standard of western Europe in the 1930ths.

Communism in it''s ideal state may provide equality, but because the communist manifest is just delusions and have no ground in reality a working communism will never exist.

Ok so you''re right, maybe capitalism in itself doesn''t make a good society, but compare the two systems and then tell me which countries that employ these ideologies have had most success, most freedoms and most were its inhabitants have the best chances of creating a good life.

You are generalizing something that is very rare among the capitalist nations. Very few of them get to be "so rich". My country has been capitalist since it was founded and has never been "so rich" (and it is the richest land of all latin-america in about almost everything, excepting money). The vast majority has been always poor, and will continue to be still poorest, because they only exist to feed the "so rich" capitalist nations.

So, don't be fanatic.

Your prime mistake: Claiming that Soviet was communist. Not even the Soviet government claimed to have achieved communism. I''m not defending Soviet, but its residents were a lot more equal before they turned to capitalism. Why do you think we Swedes are more equal than Americans? Because we have had a semi-communistic system, which imposes restrictions companies and grants us citizens some basic safety. This system is, sadly, being removed pretty fasat, though.
