How big are game terrain usually? I could create terrain of size 128x128 vertices with distance of 1.0f between each vertices but it seem so small. You could move over it really quickly. When I tried to create better size, I think the max is about 35000 vertices. Do games like Warcraft III make many sub terrains and but them together to make bigger maps? How are they to manage a good frame rate? Either that or they make the models very small. Then how to get the details? See what I''m talking about: Demos As you move using up, down, left, right, i, k, o, l, m, and n, notice how you pass the terrain very quickly.

Take a look at frustum culling with quadtrees. Combine this with GeoMipMaps or Chuncked Lod to give you a massive speed boost. After this you can increase the size to about anything you like. My own GeoMipMap renderer can go as high as 2048x2048 before running out of memory. Chncked LOD is designed to go even higher that than.

if 2048x2048 will suit your needs, I recommend GeoMipMaps. If you need a lot bigger, go with chuncked LOD.

Using DirectX 8, DrawIndexedPrimity won''t let me draw anymore than about 200x200 vertices. It must the my device capability limit on the video card. So I don''t have to put together many subterrains anyway to make a big one right?

The maps in BF1942 are 512x512......

I also have had a problem with terrain scale, more than terrain size.

My theory is that BF1942 gets away with it because the ultra high resolution textures allow you to get closer to the terrain without it becoming obvious that the taerrain is covered with a stretched bitmap

Perhaps..
