Hi, I'm currently using Visual C++ 6.0 (prof. edition (student license but still the "real" thing)) and wondering if and how I will benefit from plugging the Intel C++ compiler 7.1 into it. Has anybody here used the Intel C++ compiler and compared the speed of the compiled programs to that of the Microsoft compiler or some other compiler? I'd like to hear more objective opinions than the one on the Intel website :D and ones that come from some experience (and comparison) so I'm trying my luck here I also want to have some idea what kind of change I can expect that is related to games (3D rendering, lots of pointer arrays and lists, repetitive collision det. algorithms and such) before I download the trial version and start testing it. Thanks a lot in advance, Kári. [edited by - skeitaridaudans on May 19, 2003 10:22:33 AM]

I''ve heard that the Intel C++ compiler is actually really, really speedy.

Dunno how standards compliant it is, though

I''ve heard that too... but never from anyone that used it...

Just download the trial and see for yourself. That''s what trials are for, I''m not sure what you''re waiting for.

Put together some processor-intensive C/C++ code and try testing it with MSVC, GCC, and the Intel C++ compiler once you get ahold of the trial version.

You might want to read up on Intel''s special intrinsic functions for SSE and SSE2. This might be something that really helps out performance-wise and turns out to be useful to you.
