I need some help setting up my network. This is what I have: Server Desktop -1 nic card connected to my cable modem -1 nic card connected to my linksys router Client Desktop -1 nic card connected to nothing -1 wireless network adapter connecting to my linksys router Client Laptop -1 wireless network adapter that connects to the linksys router What I want: -To be able to connect to the internet on both the Clients as well as the Server. -To be able to share files between all three computers. -To be online with all three computers at the same time without having the laptop kick the desktop client off the internet (which it does now). What it is currently doing: - I can ping all three computers from each one - I can connect to the internet on the Server Desktop Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Your cable modem should connect directly in to your LinkSys router. There should be an uplink port on the back of your router - you''ll need a CAT 5 cable (not crossed) to do this.

If you only have three PCs in your "network" then you are as well as connecting them directly to the router too (I''m assuming its at least a 4 port with uplink) as opposed to going through an intermediary hub or switch. Your Linksys router will have packet filtering functionality.

Presumably, if you''re using a wireless NIC in you laptop, you''ll have a wirleless access point. This will, of course, be plugged in to the router as if it were the laptop directly and then you''ll need to configure it in the same IP addressing scheme as the wired network.

Once you have your infrastructure set up you''ll need to configure your operating system (OS). "Windows NT", "2K Professional" or "XP Professonal" are network operating systems. If you are using one of these then you can set up a proper domain, otherwise you''ll need to set them up in a workgroup.

Check out this site WOWN for more information.

I had that setup originally but I could not run some applications that needed my IP address. I only need to use these applications from my server desktop so I wanted a direct connection through there. I think it is referred to as a gateway?

What internal IP addressing scheme are you using on your netowrk?

You have 2 IP addresses - a Wide Area Network (WAN) IP address supplied to you via your ISP (this is what your cable modem gets) and your own internal ones per client. You should use the internal IP network address structure 10.0.0.0 and subnet mask, say, 255.255.255.0. Your one WAN address is used by all your clients if they go on the Internet (all your clients look like one system) and the clients are differentiated between by port number on your network via your router (that's its job). Did you configure your router yoourself?

Edit: Your gateway is referenced in your TCP/IP settings for each system. Set it to your routers IP address and make sure that your router is configured properly.

Set it up as mentioned earlier and if some apps on the server need more access put the server in the DMZ, available through the linksys router''s web interface.
