Maple > Matlab!!!

I had to use Maple for a project at school. I don''t really see a scenario where I''d actually want to use it for a real-world problem.

However, if they could change their motto from "Command the brilliance of a thousand mathematicians" to "Command the brilliance of a couple drunk guys and a golden retriever", that would be grand.

If I recall correctly, Maple (never used it) is a full CAS (computer algebra system) where as Matlab is crap (have used it)

We use matlab at Uni... not bad, but you''d think that they could have done better.

CAS rox0rz in my b0x0rz *looks at texas instruments*

Maple is superior in both it''s interface/graphics, and it''s ability to do both symbolic and numerical calculations with almost infinite precision.

They are two different things. MATLAB is vastly superior when it comes to numerical analysis but it''s not a symbolic package, which MAPLE is. Generlly you need both.

Oh, and if your comment is that Matlab is crap, well sorry but then you have no idea what you''re talking about!

Ok then - it''s crap for what I need to do with it, especialy for the maths I am doing at the moment in uni. Another program (for instance, maple, or a TI) would be more approprate.

I can believe that! MAPLE truly is amazing for some mathematical stuff.

I use maple and I really like it. I haven''t seen matlab in action so I can''t contribute constructively to the flamewar. Mathematica seems nice too but I haven''t used it either.
Actually it just depends what you need it for. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Honestly, Mathematica is so much better than both of them combined.

Mathematica is great in the sense that you can enter problems in standard mathematical notation. Maple and Mathematica are both symbolic math engines and as such overlap quite a bit. And, again, when it comes to numerical calculations MATLAB outperforms both of them.

They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

The only problem in choosing is the price and the licencing: I can get a free copy of Maple at my uni, just because they have an agreement. But If I wanted to play around witch mathematica, I would have to do all the work at uni, because they don''t have the license that allows the students to install mathematica at home. And buying the software is not an option for a poor (greedy) student.

Not to mention the outrageous pricing of MATLAB which makes Microsoft pricing policy seem like customer-suck-up....

After reading Wolfram''s "A New Kind Of Science", you may develop a sort of hate against Mathematica (just because Wolfram is saying how good it is every other page), be warned
