Im starting to get mighty pissed off with windows and wondering what i have to do to switch to linux. Am i going to have to delete evrything? what will and wont run on it, important things like kazaa a msvc++ and games n''stuff. I know theres different linux packages you can download and which one should i get. is it worth swithing, will my comp freeze less? Any info would be greatly apriciated.

Um, for kazaa, look into gnutella clients.

Don''t use MSVC++ on linux, that''s just dumb.

Games. Well, some will work with wine, some won''t. Basically, keep windows for the games.

ive got tonnes of space. How do you run both at the same ime though, and i would want to delete windows at some point.

Which of those packages are best, like redhat and all that.

I''ve heard Mandrake is relatively easy to set up, at least, compared to the others.

Not necessarily. Depending on how you''ve partitioned your hard drive and how much space you have, you may be able to install Linux on the same disk. Alternatively, you can add a second drive and install Linux to that. If you decide to reinstall Windows for any reason, remember to install it before you install Linux because Windows will disregard and overwrite the Linux boot record entry (it''s not very friendly at playing with other OSes; Linux will happily coexist with multiple OSes).

Replace KaZaA with GNUtella. GCC is the development package of choice (as well as the default), but you have a choice in IDEs. The Linux IDE options are not as polished as MSVC, but they may present unique and very useful functionality simply because they''re built on Unix environments, which are development oriented.

There are many reasons why your computer may be freezing, which may not have to do with Windows (poor hardware, for example) or which may affect Windows'' stability but really be separate issues (poor device drivers, for example). Try to look into all these. Linux is not a panacea for system instability.

Go to a bookstore and get a book on linux. A lot of them come with a linux distro. I personally like redhat, becuase it is the most popular and a lot of things are made to be compatible with it out of the box. However, dont get redhat 8.0. I hear it comes without mp3 support, and you have to enable it yourself. I use redhat 7.3. SuSE is decent too. Never tried mandrake.

Mandrake is a breeze. It was extremely easy to install it, and to set up web, FTP, and mail servers. It comes with a good selection of applications, too. And it is completely free. Just download the three ISO''s and burn them.

Kazaa-> get a Gnutella client, like Gnuculus (I think that is a Linux one). For legal reasons, Mandrake doesn''t include any on the CD''s, but there something called the Penguin Liberation Front which has a large selection of packages for Mandrake that couldn''t be put on the CD for legal reasons.

MSVC-> KDevelop, just to name one IDE. Dev-C++ is not available for Linux (a while ago, there was some development work done to port it, but the developers figured it wasn''t worth it, because of the availability of other good IDE''s).

Games-> Mandrake (and other distros) include lots of applications on the installation CD''s, including games. I''ve got a bunch installed, but most of them are smaller games (like cards, pinball, Jeezball, and small arcade games). There aren''t a huge amount of commercial games, or big 3d games for Linux. If you wanna be a serious gamer, then you''ll probably still need Windows for the time being (Wine just won''t cut it for some things, especially newer games).

ok, i dont know much about computers but what i do know is when i start my computer windows loads up, can i make it so linux does instead. Most things i am ok with reinstalling and stuff but i do have 1400 or so songs that i would rather not have to get again. I dont have to many games or anything other than small rpg''s on emulators. can i make it so linux automatically loads but i can switch to windows if i want to?

Every distro I''ve ever worked with (SuSE, Mandrake, Slackware (a little tiny bit)) installs a boot loader thingy. Mandrake''s and SuSE''s is graphical. When you boot your computer, after the BIOS screen when it''d usually go ahead and boot Windows, it''ll show you this little menu where you can select Linux, Windows, and a couple other options involving Linux.

I like the DARK layout!

Not to be rude or anything...

If you can''t configure Windows to work properly, don''t even think about installing Linux.

I have been using red hat linux and its pretty simple and free!

I think I will invest in a Dist linux like SuSe Pro.
