GDMag is attached to the IGDA, so you automatically get a subscription if you are a member.

U.S. only, right? Damn.
''All IGDA members receive a free subscription to Game Developer magazine, including student and international members.''

This has nothing to do with GameDev (although you can get a 10% discount on IGDA membership if you''re a GameDev member).

Kickass! I just took that "U.S. and Canadian citizens only" line under just about anything you can subscribe to online for granted.

That means very little. A lot of online things describing themselves as "world", "global", "universal" and "international" so and so only apply to one continent.

Or it''s available worldwide, yet only the goodies you get in the mail are available in the US. That sort of thing.

I''m in the UK and an IGDA member, GDMag turns up on my doorstep every month.

Internationl Game Developers Association is a industry body, a community if you will

quote:

Our membership is made up of programmers, designers, artists, producers and many other development professionals who see the importance of working together to advance games and game development as a craft. Your involvement is critical to the success of your career, the IGDA and our industry.

There are dozens of reasons to join the IGDA, ranging from personal career advancement to more lofty, industry-wide goals. Here are some:

To make a difference
To support the growth and development of games as an art form
To learn from your peers around the world
To connect with other game developers through local chapters
To add your views to the collective voice of the game development community
To access resources for managing the business of game development
To contribute to an intelligent dialogue about games in our culture
To increase the number and quality of trained, entry-level developers
To improve the public image of games and game developers
To reward innovation and excellence in our industry
To become more effective as a group rather than separately
To stop complaining and start changing
To get discounts on relevant products, events and services
To wear your IGDA member ribbon at GDC ;-)
What are you waiting for? Join Today!

(Please note: Membership in the IGDA is open to everyone - being a professional game developer is not required. Rather, a love for games and the willingness to support the IGDA''s mission are what really count.)

There are discounts on books and periodicals from many of the most popular suppliers, discounts on software etc:

Power in numbers, make a difference - building links with academia, access to targeted research, a collective voice when it comes to changing the bad things about the industry (crediting, tax and legal issues, business models etc).

Organised chapter meetings to get together with other developers local to you.

For those of us not in the US, the price of the IGDA subscription with free game developer magazine is the same as the cost of just a game developer magazine subscription on its own so it''s a no-brainer.

No, this is a website, it''s best left on the web. There is the newsletter which highlights recent things. Are you getting it?

actually, I don''t think tahts all that bad of an idea. Most professional magazines are exactly that... magazines aimed at professionals.

I''d be neat to take the articles and the most interesting threads and compile it all into a magazine aimed at the aspiring independant game developer.

Raduprv is right, it would help with funds for the site and help to reach a wider audience.

Magazines are very expensive to publish and distribute. Publishing and distributing online is almost free, comparitively speaking. I just don''t think it''s very realistic. Oh, and as for the "not everyone knows of gamedev" argument, that is only valid if you''re talking about stocking the magazine on retailers'' shelves, which is a good way of being noticed. However that is even more expensive.

Considering the trickle of new content around here (and the quality ie ''extremely simple scripting engine'') a few things are obvious: 1. a gdnet mag would be an annual thing and 2. it would be a flop. I''ve said it before; what the indie gamedev community needs is more intermediate level material, I know I''m not good enough to make it. So I just complain about it. Yeah, yeah, I know gamedev.net is free; but you asked.

Yes, I was thinking of putting it on the shelves.
I don''t know about the costs, but I believe this might worth a try. Especially if some of us would preorder it, to give them a start. I would also be willing to contribute to the content of the magazine, and, I believe, others would want to do that as well.
