What are your feelings on nuclear weapons? I personally think that they are not good and should not be used. You could use a precision guided weapon and destroy the same target without all the damage to the surrounding area. Also, they cause long term enviromental damage. That could remove the ability to grow crops in an area hit with a nuke for years. So what do you think? [edited by - nate0326 on May 29, 2003 6:11:31 PM]

Nuclear weapons are nothing. Wait untill they start toying with the prospect of Antimater bombs in the future. Thats when I will get scared.

As for nukes, the concpts behind them were ment to be good for the survival of the human race, as it was ment for almost pollution free power, but some millitary nuts thought "hmm....that much energy? lets make a bomb!". Whats the point in having them where if you use them your target will retailiate and you''ll both be totaly destroyed??

The one good use i can think for them is if we ever need a huge explaotion for non-war purposes, like blowing up enemy alien space craft (that hopefully dont have shields), or blowing up asteriods. These uses are good and others like it, but war and destruction, i really hate.

1. a single Nuclear bomb, while very deadly, do not damage a large enough piece of land to bother with the enviremental issues. I think if 3 went off, over the earth randomly(don''t quote me on this), it will only affect 2-3%
2. Precision guided weapons are something totally different than a nuclear weapon. They arn''t even realted. A nuclear bomb is more for carpet bombing runs, where no one cares where their bombs go. to be percise, you need a place to be percise TO.
3. conventional bombs release toxins, cause enviremental damage that could remove the ability to grow crops. Look at pictures of vietnam, they still have blast crators that have nothing except a pool of filthy water in them...
4. A Hurrican, over its life, delivers the same force of between 2- 5 nuclear bombs. The earth lives though that every year, I doubt a real nuclear bomb would affect the earth much...

Plus, you missing a very important point. Now that we have nuclear weapons, we cannot get rid of ''em. They''re here until the end of society as we know, when everyone lives in caves and such...

The problem with nuclear weapons is that they come from an era where bombing cities was acceptable.

If a nuclear attack took out a chunk of a major US city I do not think it would be justified to retaliate by nuking an enemy city. They''re all innocent people and you might as well stop the butchering at one destroyed city rather than upping the ante to 2.

A conventional military response would be necessary. The concept of MAD just isn''t ethical.

Nukes are what prevented the Cold War from becoming a Hot War, so I guess they are good. Neutron bombs are really nice though. Kills the enemies but leaves their tanks, rifles and supplies behind.

No kidding, this discussion has all the sophistication found in an elementary school play yard.

No one has even mentioned the fact that Congress repealed a ban on underground nuke testing last month to pursue more effective bunker busting bombs using 5 kiloton or smaller sized nukes.

And how about the fact that when the first nukes were used in 1945 it was a 'total war' ie society versus society for survival, complete mobilization of entire populations for the war effort (ever heard of Rosey the riveter?)

And how about the fact the periods of total wars are interspersed with periods of smaller conflicts conducted by small professional militaries between wealthy nations? This can be shown conclusively by examining almost any time period. (The coloial skirmishes in the mid to late 1700's and the massive Napoleonic wars in the early 1800's for starters.)

I have not read statement more devoid of historical context than this one.

IT''s just like every other weapon save for it being on a massively larger scale. What do people expect? As technology progresses the arsenal is usually the first to benefit. Boo hoo, man is a horribly violent animal. Deal.

I think the world will be a better place if we traded in all of our modern weapons for clubs and sticks but there will always be people who won''t resort to clubbings.

A stick with a rusty nail is a more civilized weapon than a nuclear weapon.

Military technology only ever gives a temporary advantage to the nation that first develops it, because eventually everyone else will catch up. It''s an ongoing cycle. What''s different with nuclear weapons is that the stakes are a lot higher than with any previous technology, and (unfortunately) there is absolutely no conceivable way that they could ever be removed from the world''s armouries. The cycle only works one way.
