I just graduated from high school last week and as my graduation gift my parents are getting me a new computer for college. They did the same with my older sister and spent $600 for the whole system (not including tax). So they have set the max at $600 =(. I''ve already found a killer deal on a 17'' monitor for $90. I also plan on using some of my own money to buy an additional 512mbs of Ram and a real nice graphics card (probably a raidon 9700 ultra for $200). The only thing I really want in the system is a pentium 4, 512mbs ram, and a case that doesn''t look like crap (ie: no compaq presiaros) Now, I have until august before I goto college, so there are two months that I can wait for prices to go down. My question is, will the prices lower enough in two months to make a difference, or should I just buy now? Are there any trustworthy sites that can get me a nice deal on the memory (other then pricewatch). Any other advice I might want to consider would be useful. Thanks

Yes, 2 months is a significant amount of time and the prices will go down a little. I would certainly wait. If you want the best deal for your money when it comes to CPUs, go with the AMD Athlon or Opteron (if you can afford it). AMDs give great performance and are less expensive than equilavent Pentiums. I wouldn''t be to sure about buying memory off pricewatch. A lot of those sites are kinda shifty...and you should really buy name brand memory, like Kingston, Mushkin, or Corsair.

Why don't you buy an Athlon? They're cheaper than Pentiums.

dude, dell is not all it''s cracked up to be.
at my wife''s work they ordered 10 new dells.
4 of them had problems:
-one wouldn''t even boot
-two had faulty CD-ROM drives
-one had a bad floppy drive

i could see if 1 in say, 500 or so was bad, but 4 out of 10??
that''s horrible.

Now, assuming I''m going to be getting a pentium 4 (I don''t like AMD) ... what is a good motherboard to get?

The "dell dude" got arrested for drugs. [THREAD HIJACK?]
now who in their right mind would purchase a computer from a company that puts weed-smokers in their comercials

as everyone said... What is wrong with AMD. IMO you get way more for the price in an AMD the a P4 chip. also is dell really cheaper than other places?

I got my computer from some small no-name store( yeah I didn''t build it). It has all brand name parts and it is a whole lot cheaper than Dell. And whith Dell you can''t get AMD!

I''ve also had a lot of problems with Dells. My school ordered ten of them for one of the labs. Three of them failed. One had a faulty hard disk, another''s video card died, and the last one had a bad network card.

I''d reccommend getting a computer from a local outfit. They can be hit or miss though, so do some research first. Usually they''ll give you a lot better support than some huge corporation like Dell or Gateway. The computer store in my town gives free maintainance on all of their computers (you still have to pay for parts if necessary) for as long as you own them (not just 90 days like most others).

Err, hate to inturupt your thread here...but anyone have any good motherboard suggestions?

nForce 2 type motherboards are good.

BTW, Screw the P4! Wait until this fall and get an Athlon64.

For crying out loud, she has fishes coming out of her head on either side. How can you find this hot?!

ATIAbit NF7-S v2.0 is a great motherboard, you can get it for $185 CDN. (Assuming you're getting an AMD of course )

I would suggest Barton 2500+ with that motherboard, the Barton is $135 or so and properly set up you could overclock it to 3200+ or more.

You're probably gonna have to go skimpy on the video card since they're so expensive these days.

If you gave us a price range and some features you''re looking for, we could be more helpful. That said, yeah, nForce 2 based boards are nice. I''ve had good experience with Gigabyte boards as well. All depends on what you want to pay, and what you''re looking for, really.

And, why don''t you like AMD?

I've read some stuff that gives me the impression they are not put together quite as nicly...but I think it's just nostalgia.
So that, and the fact limited budget, I've decided to get an AMD.

Ok, here's the parts I'm getting so far. I'm limited to around $900

What I need...................Minium requirment
--------------------------------------------------
case w/power supply...........(found a nice one for $57)
Motherboard...........Something that works with everything else
processor....................AMD 2700 (134)
10/100 card.....................----- (15)
hard drive......................60gig (64)
cdrom...........................----- (20 ...so says pricewatch)
vid card...................... I'd really like a nice one. Probably getting an ATI 9600 for $200...may go cheaper

monitor......................17' ($90)
keyboard/mouse......................already have mouse, will buy $15 keyboard
memory.........................1024mb....at $112
sound card......................sound blaster....$43
speakers...................... not positive, think I found some for $30
and windows xp ...................... old computer broke, legal to use that copy (awesome)

after I add all that up...I get around 780...so I can spend around 120, but I wouldn't mind if I had a few bucks to spare.

edit: how do you make one of those text boxes?
edit2: maybe this'll work.

Gigabyte GA/7VA Motherboard (Fits Athlon CPUs) is a good buy.

Edit: to use a text box use the [ source ] and [ /source] tags. (Don't put those spaces in though)

thanks..I'll take care of that next time =)
oh, and I said they set the max at $600 earlier and say my max is $900 now because I am allowed to throw 300 of my own at it.

WOAH!!!

A seventeen foot monitor for $90? Your money problems are solved, just sell that sucker back for several thousand dollars and you can get whatever computer components you want!!

I've had nothing but pleasure from Dell. Their next day onsite support is bliss. I ran my laptop constantly (24/7) for 2 years before the screen went bad. A Dell rep came over and replaced it for me the next day.
