Hey Iam a bit new to the OpenGL API. I just finished reading my first OpenGL Game Programming book a few weeks/days ago, and I was working on my Game Engine for my first game. But iam having a real problem with creating the worlds/stages. I try to use HeightMaps to create the terrain but for some reason I dont know how to fix the Heightmap Appears very far from the screen. I was wondering if any of you knew why it would be doing this. Another thing is I would like to know how some of you go about creating your stages/worlds in your games since iam almost clueless on how to arrive to that.

Most people just use maps from games which are similar to their own, ie. if you're making an FPS, you load Half-Life or Quake III maps. Once you've practised on these, you can write your own level editor, which basically enables you to make whatever map you need for your game. This can be as simple or as complex as you like, but plan it on paper before you start (they can easily get out of hand; I know, check DarkVertex in the sig)

As to your terrain problem, you haven't explained it too well, but you might be creating it wrong. Try to create your heightmap around the origin (0, 0, 0), then make sure your camera is near the origin. I draw little origin lines (red, green and blue) in most of my OpenGL apps, so I always know where the scene and camera are in relation to the origin. That way, I don't get lost...

My opinion is a recombination and regurgitation of the opinions of those around me. I bring nothing new to the table, and as such, can be safely ignored.[ Useful things - Firefox | GLee | Boost | DevIL ]
