Here is the best rendering I''ve ever managed to obtain:

I have a bunch of Mandelbrot Set images here. Here are the neatest ones from this very small bunch that I made:

(neat simple swirl next to complex region)

(cool, because the mini-brot is curvy, which are hard to find)

(neat square image)

I haven't really messed around with it all that much. I've been meaning to re-program it with smooth colors, and a better optimizing algorithm to draw it faster. I will one of these days...

I''ve made a couple of Mandelbrot generators before. As for colouring, I''ve always used the number of iterations, put through different function to generate the colour. Why not make this topic into show your best MandelBrot renderings. Here are my best and only surviving ones:

Pic 1
Pic 2
Pic 3
Pic 4
Pic 5

I like numbers 4 and 5 the best. Each one is zoomed in more than the last.

higherspeed, I just took a look at your pics, and it seems to me that you ''cut off'' part of the mandelbrot set. When you determine that a point is not within the set, you do so with a range too small, and thus some points should be within the set that your program determines are outside of the set. Take a close look at your first picture, compared to my image of the entire fractal, and you''ll see what I''m talking about. In general, to get smooth lines, you must determine a point is not within the set when it is outside of a unit circle with radius 2 centered at (0,0) in the complex plane - this is limit I use for my pictures, although this is not the only possibility (nor the quickest to compute).

I suppose it''s possible I put 2 instead of 4, causing the region to be a circle of sqrt(2) instead of 2. They''re very old pictures, so I no longer have the code to hand to check.

I like your colourings, smoothing out the boundaries would be nice though, as you have both smooth and edges.

It''s just a pity about your taste in cars. Although the Vanquish is nice. Also I''d argue that they make good backgrounds. All those pictures are far to distracting.

Maybe you could have a go at some animations.

btw, does anyone know how the color hex codes work on this board? I assumed it was 0xrrggbb, but that is not the case.

You mean like #rrggbb?

Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other player's eyes with his King.

Yes, they are too distracting, but I only have a few icons on the desktop, anyway, and I usually have my IDE or browser maximized, so maybe I am not considering what most people would prefer. I actually prefer very simple backgrounds. I have made quite a few more than what I have on my webpage - it it just a pain to get adobe to save the pic in all those resolutions. I should try and make an action for that, but I am unsure how to specify filenames when saving, since I don''t mess around with it all that much.

I have made animations a long time ago, but they are all using my own format, and thus requires my own DOS program to view them. I will have to try and make some AVIs one of these days... It''s on my to do list.
