I always ass-u-me-d that the latest SDK''s were available for all platforms, but, after advising someone to look into Java to develope multiplatform for the MacOS I went over to Sun to try and find the download for the JDK 1.4.1 for the Mac. Thats right, its not there. In fact, as far as I can tell from the Sun site, there HAS NEVER BEEN A SDK FOR THE MAC!!!! I am totally floored by this. Does anyone know why?

Actually, Sun did release a Java SDK for the Mac, way back when it first came out, version 1.0.2. Since then, you need to get the SDK from Apple.

Because Apple develops the SDKs/JREs, just like IBM develops the SDKs/JREs for OS/2. Sun can''t possibly develop them for all platforms, that''s a mammoth task. Frankly I''m surprised they develop for Linux, considering both IBM and Blackdown already had that covered.

For Mac OS Classic, the best you get is Java 1.1.8. Apple wisely decided Java just doesn''t work on that dinosaur of an OS. For OSX, Java 1.4.1 is out. And I believe Panther has 1.4.2, but I''m not certain of that.

It still sucks though. Apple takes their sweet ass time releasing new JDKs (1.4.1 was released about a year behind everyone else), and when they are released they''re not very good. Lots of performance and bug complaints abound for Apple''s 1.4.1.

Hmmm, My applet games ran decently on a Mac OS 9(?) with internet explorer; I don''t know what the jre was but my code used all AWT stuff.

So if someone writes a game that really pushes the 1.4 gfx in windows using jdk 1.4.1 fullscreen with bufferstrategies etc... How is it going to run on OS X? Has anyone tried this?

AWT''s been around for ages, 1.1.8 can run quite a bit of AWT.

According to people over at javagaming.org, it won''t run very well. I have no direct experience myself but I''ve been told you''re better off staying in windowed mode than going fullscreen on OSX as OSX''s fullscreen mode was done poorly.

But, at least OSX has fullscreen mode. Linux doesn''t have it at all. Apple can improve things, and with 1.4.2 or 1.5 I''d bet fullscreen mode in OSX will rock. Linux hasn''t even gotten a start yet :/

If you really want high performance on all OSes (well, Windows, OSX, Linux and Solaris that is), use JOGL. My game''s now running at a couple hundred frames per seconds and I can do far more special effects and such than I could ever dream of with Java 2D.

If you want full screen on linux, go to www.lwjgl.org and use their libraries. They haven''t released the OSX port yet, but they''re working on it.
