I''m just super pissed because today I really really really really had a huge urge to play Command and Conquer again (C&C95) but nooooo! What do I get? An error because it won''t run on Windows 2000. I looked for a patch at the EA site but the only thing there was was a patch for C&C Gold! GOD WHY! I downloaded the C&C Gold patch anyway but it didn''t work. So I though, "Ok, I can deal with this like an adult, I''ll just instal Red Alert, hopefully that will work" but again, NOOOOOOOO Red Alert wouldn''t even INSTALL! Infact, I had to install Warcraft 2 to get my oldschool RTS fix. I never liked WC2 that much either. I know someone is going to tell me that game developers can''t support games forever blah blah yeah well shut up! I don''t care if they can''t support games forever. They should at least support Red Alert and C&C forever because those are like the BEST GAMES EVER. /me throws his monitor accross the room in a blind rage then goes to kick some orc ass in WC2

Hmmm... I wonder if Wine will work in Windows? That''d be interesting. Or, if not, if you were to install Linux and use Wine to play C&C. Wouldn''t that be ironic?
I like the DARK layout!

Heh, I''m thinking about dualbooting with 98 just so I can play those games.

Actually, parts of Wine - namely, the higher level DLLs - have already been ported to Windows/MinGW, to eventually be used as part of ReactOS.

ReactOS... where can I learn more about that?

Upgrade to Windows 2003 Server and use the Windows 95 emulation mode. 2k3 is a far superior OS to 2k, even for gaming, and isn''t too much more expensive if you get the stripped-out Web Server edition.

Careful there... IIS is just about as bad as sendmail with security flaws.

Did you try running the program in Windows 95 compatibility mode?

How do I get into Windows 95 compatibility mode? This better not be a cruel joke

Right click shortcut to the program, select properties, click on compatibility tab, check the box, pick "Windows 95 Compatibility Layer", hit OK.

There is no compatibility tab in the properties window.

Mine has it.. but I guess it doesn''t come standard in windows 2000. There''s either a patch that adds it, or it comes with one of the service packs (SP3, maybe?).

Yes, it doesn't come standard, you need to mess with stuff: Link

Apparently that only works in SP2 and above though.. so make sure you've updated to at least that.

Hmm.. link isn't working for me. If you want to find it another way, click on the first result of this google search.

If you''re a 3DMax user, be careful about those service packs:

"Attention All 3ds max Customers,

We have identified and confirmed that installing the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 causes the corruption of .max files. All 3ds max (.max) files saved with Windows 2000 SP4 installed will no longer load in 3ds max on systems with Windows 2000 SP2 or SP3 installed. Our Engineering Team has narrowed in on the problem and is working with Microsoft to resolve the situation. In the interim it is strongly advised that all 3ds max users do not install the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. If Windows 2000 SP 4 has already been installed it is suggested that customers revert back to SP2 to create usable (.max) file content. This affects all 3ds max files created in versions 3 through 5.1

Bear in mind that 3ds max 5.1 is officially supported for Windows 2000 SP2, so for optimum stability revert to this operating system platform to use 3ds max 5.

Thank you for patience and assistance in getting this problem resolved."

Nope, doesn''t work in Windows 95 compatibility mode. I get the exact same error: "The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

Meh
