While at a lan party i started to notice a few people had linux operating systems running and i thought to myself (i wonder if Linux will run games better or just be overall faster). I was just wondering if i should consider getting linux and if you guys think more games will come linux compatable. I would also like to know if i should start making games and keep linux in mind to make it portable for linux.

Knowledge is power. Not that I would know too much about that! I ''m using a book right now called "Practical Guide to Redhat Linux 8" By Sobell and its a really good albeit thick book. If tweaking an OS sounds like fun to you as well as the control it offers you on that same token other than Windows then go for it.

It certainly wouldn''t hurt in any way to learn Linux - it''s always good to know as much as possible about various things. I personally think that Linux is no longer just an alternative server, it''s becoming a very viable desktop operating system.

The problem at the moment is that it is still a very ''techie'' OS but more and more people are learning about it and releasing their apprehensions about the fact that it''s free.

Be careful which distribution you go for - I have had quite a few stability problems with some of the commercial distributions. I started using Linux when it first came to the UK on a cover disc of PC Plus magazine (about 1994) which was a slackware distribution. For me personally, it''s the best one.

As for games, some companies are devloping Linux versions of their games (id, Novalogic (I think)) and I think more will develop them as time goes on. Basically, if the engines are cross platform then the games will be.

If you know linux you basically know Solaris and Mac OS X too since they are also Unix derivatives, so learning Linux means that you will have knowledge on operating a number of different OS.
