How do I set the backbuffer to be my render target?

IDirect3DDevice9::GetRenderTarget after you create the device to get the back buffer render target.

IDirect3DDevice9::SetRenderTarget to set that whenever you need.

This is not a big thing but I red that you could set render target directly to the back buffer (whitout GetRenderTarget) and get curious...

When you CreateDevice() the render target will AUTOMATICALLY be set to the back buffer for you.
