transparent button bitmaps?

I am creating this toolbar control in windows. The bitmaps which are going to be on the buttons are loaded into a resource file which is then linked with the program. So when I specify which bitmap is going to be on which button, I simply give the instance of the program and the id of the bitmap. And this works all fine, however the bitmaps are not transparent where I want them to be. So how do I do that? My idea is that there is a predefined index color which is transparent in windows, and if so which one? If not, do you have any other ideas? thanks

There are different ways of achieving this depending on how you are implementing your toolbar.

Instead of using bitmaps, you can use icons or image lists.

Instead of using GDI you can use GDI+ then you can get access to all the extended functionality it provides like translucency etc.
