I was wondering what potential you all see in 3D window managers. Such as: Would it be possible? Would it be worthwhile? Would you download one? (for free, of course) I''m not sure exactly how it would be done. I would think it would be very interesting to see, though. One problem i foresee is actually getting the window contents displayed on a 3D surface.. OpenGL is very limiting as to textures to be mapped on it''s surfaces. Does anyone have any thoughts on how it could be done? And I''m not talking about just windows here, I''m talking about in general. If you know a possibility for one OS that may not work on another, share anyway. (hint hint: X Windows System) =-= l33t hax0r? logitank.net

My personal opinion on this is ''No''. I think the display and input technologies are going to have to change to facilitate a true 3D workspace.

Also, X11 isn''t really the protocol one would want to use to build such a workspace IMO. Something new would have to be devised, no use stacking it on top/beneath/beside.

I''m talking true 3D workspace, not some VRML cruft.

Wait a year. Longhorn has native 3d windowing.

EDIT: My opinion: I think its a VERY good idea. It would be very cool if eventually an entirely different way to interact with your PC was developed. A mouse but in 3d, and I don't mean your roller ball. The most logical ways would seem to be a glove that could detect forward motion which would be Z movement, and moving your fingers/hand up/down or left/right would be Y/X movement. Look at my desktop right now. Imagine if I could harness an entirely new dimension of useful clutter. That would be great!!

As another note I think what I am desiring from a 3d windowing system is far beyond what longhorn plans to offer. Everything I've read seems to imply it will just have 3d eye candy such as windows 'flopping' like paper when you move them. Perhaps after longhorn though. Hmmm... how many ski resort names are there?

They''ve already released demos of the technology. It will be included.

Seriously though, imagine writing a sort of application that purposefully made you change your focus every so often. "Ophthalmologist approved".

Maybe then I could cease the useless fucking destruction of what used to be perfect vision. It''s going to take a lot of work to get back near-perfect vision.

BTW, they do have gyroscopic ''mice''.

If youre doing this to make some 3d fun I say go for it. But if youre doing this to make the PC easier to use I rather want to talk to my PC and let it do all the browsing around in the system.
