I was wondering if anyone knew how to go about making a program to install/uninstall a game? What do programs of these types usually do? For example, how do I check if OpenGL or DirectX exists on the computer? Should I make a program that just copies files to a hard drive? Thanks.

Most times, games don''t install OpenGL drivers, they assume that the GFX card came with drivers. You might want to have the option of installing a software OpenGL driver, but I''m not sure if the ones that are out there can be distributed (And who wants to use software rendering anyway?). As for DirectX drivers, there is a special interface for installing directx drivers. I think its called "DirectSetup" or something.

Other than that, just copy files over unless you are working with the registry (evil! evil! no game needs the registry! lol j/k)

I use a free program called InnoSetup, it''s very good and supports uninstall.

It''s completely free and well maintained.

Thanks for all your help!
Just curious though, what is the purpose of the "evil" registry?

In the registry you can keep some data, in my case, i save the drive from where the program installed, in other cases, maybe a serial key, or anything that you want to be stored for your game to use.

Whatever you do don''t use InstallShield or MSI! Even worese, the one that comes with VB!

InstallShield is the same crummy ugly program they have been using for 10 years and MSI likes to not work properly and mess up your computer (Microsoft, figures...). Once MSI would pop up and complain, up which took several seconds, every time I opened up IE or Explorer! I had to rip a pile of GUIDs out of the registry to fix it

You SHOULD use an install program though, it makes it much cleaner and professional. You don''t have to make any folders and copy files or delete the folder when you are tired of it. A lot of people probably don''t know how to do this or will screw it up and complain to you.

I would make my own program, it can''t be that hard and would add a nice touch to your game. Have you seen the programs that Westwood used for their CnC games?

If you want a nice, small and configuable (sp?) installer then try NSIS, ive used it before now for a couple of things and found it to be very good

Yeah Inno setup is great! I first ignored that program, because it''s script-based, but after taking a better look at it, I saw it was very easy to make a descent installer with lots of features. It''s a well-documented program
