hi. i'm just wondering if it is a good idea to use c# for a map editor (that will be public) for my 2d game ? simply because i find it the easiest language to write my program in. thanks!

Whatever floats your boat, but I''d probably use Visual Basic. It''s good for simple graphical stuff like tile-based map editors.

yeah. the thing with c# is that the runtimes alone are like 20 MB. but i''ll use it anyway

For all future releases of windows will have .net framework installed inside. So you don''t have to worry about the future. Haha!

Yeah, actually any language is suitable for map editors.

I think its a very good idea to use C# for a map editor. My brother is doing a presentation where he works to show the benifits of using C# to develop game tools.

Personally I didnt have any experience whatsoever with the language, got a contract to make a business application so I thought I would develop in .net so I could learn C# at the same time and I have to say its VERY easy to learn and use.

Much better than MFC, much easier than handmaking everything with win32 and combined with Managed DirectX I dont think you can get a faster way to develop game tools.

I realy do not see a reson a newbie would go out and learn MFC if you have C# & .NET that makes UI desing as easy as creating tables in Word :D

And if you have the power of c++ and simplicity of vb in one language ...

you calling me a newbie ?! now it''s getting personal
nah. just kidding.
it''s cool that so many have replied.
the best thing about c#, i think, is first that it''s so easy to use. also there are alot of controls and stuff (lite the magic library) and it''s also easy to create them.

If you already feel comfortable with the langauge - its a no brainer: go for it. The more I use C# the more I like it. If you had never used C# and just wanted to do a map editor you may get a bit frusterated trying to learn a new langauge while trying to write something important. But if you know what you are doing, or are willing to spend some time learning before jumping into a real project, I cant recommend it enough.
