Thinking in C++ by Bruce Eckel Good book? Worth reading or should I read something else instead?

I don''t know about thinking in C++ but I read thinking in Java and I think It''s an excellent book.

I have the E-book (pdf) version of Thinking in C++, I read barely any of it but from what I''ve read it seems really good. A lot of people would recommend it.

I learned from it, but I had the gripe that it didn't teach about objects up front. When I got to the object oriented aspect of C++ it took me an extra week to figure out that what I was trying to do was possible. I've heard that the Koenig and Moo book is better. Perusing it at the store I tend to agree. But 'Thinking' is a decent book.

[edit] - I should have said basic objects are not hard to understand from this book. It was the true power of polymorphism which gave me difficulty. I was trying to grasp a design pattern in my head and see how it could be accomplished in C++. Eckel did not have enough meat on polymorphism and virtual functions for me to see it clearly until I had pondered it for a week. That was a difficult week. From my perusal of K & M it appears that that week would have been considerably shorter.

Though as I said before, I haven''t read Thinking in C++, I found objects very easy to understand by myself. They''re basically something that can do a number of functions.

all an object is, is a specific instance of a group of data defined by a layout (i.e: class definition). Operations defined for that class may also be performed on that object.

Fairly simple.

I''d say the first volume is a great introduction to the language, it does not go very deep but it does point out how the compiler will handle things and such, which i found very useful to know. The second volume i found less useful, it tackles things like exceptions and stl but most of that is described better in other stuff that can be found online.
It is a free download though, start in it and see how you like it.
