I have a computer running Windows 3.1 and is VERY old. It''s about 13 years old but I can''t really remember the stats of the CPU and stuff. I''m wondering if I can find something that will work with that or just maybe a very old version of DOS.

OS version isn''t much use when finding a compiler, I suggest finding out the processor type and speed and the memory size and hd size.

Some possibilities:

DJGPP
Borland might have old compilers

Don''t forget Watcom. It''s open source hippieware now too. :D

I''m hip because I say "M$" instead of "MS".

If it''s Windows 3.1 I would suggest MSVC 1.52.

Linux runs very well on old machines. You could install a minimalist window manager and the g++ compiler. Howvever you would have to learn a little about the OS which you may or may not be interested in.

I know how to use Linux but my CD-Rom drive on it is broken and I can''t find any Linux iso files that boot from a floppy. And I think my hard drive space is about 50 meg.

Where can I find a copy of that?

Can definitely recommend Turbo C++ which you can download free from

http://community.borland.com/museum/

Or, you could have a look at

http://web.cs.pub.ro/~vycxs/xs/

which has a DOS version and plenty of libraries. source code is available as well.

I see Watcom is going opensource, too, and targets DOS as one of its many platforms.

http://www.openwatcom.org/

And, if you have time, you could browse the list of free comilers at

http://www.compilers.net/Dir/Free/Compilers/CCpp.htm

Hope this is helpful enough.
