That actually got cancelled about 18 months ago.

I think the "done when its done design and release" method is a bad method for GD, and is just plain lazy.
Games take a lot of work, and deadlines are ALWAYS a pain in the ass for developers, big or small.
But using the phrase "It''s done when it''s done" shows weakness IMHO. How professional is that? Not even giving a release date?
I mean c''mon, if the game is a big project, and you want to be sure to include everything from original design (documents), then get organized and set a realistic release date. The way I see it there''s nothing wrong with saying a game is going to take 4 1/2 years to develop (unless I''m missing some market component, whereby a given release date would effect sales)
If you''re organized and realistic, anyone can give a good release date, it''s not fair to say a deadline will restrict creativity or quality. And it''s certainly a lot better to do so in the first place, because you''re going to have (presumably) a lot of happy gamers.
ID is just making a half assed effort.

Are you sure about that? I don''t seem to remeber valve making a press release in regards to that.
I pretty sure that''s strictly rumor. Last months CGM interviewed the design team at valve, and statements were made that point to TFC2 being an ongoing and very active project, despite being put on the backburner by valve so design efforts can be focoused on HL2.
Correct me if I''m wrong.
I think the only reason TF2 seemed to die off was the fact that they moved it to the then secret steam engine (one hl2 uses) and so said no more about it. Some people reackon it''s gonna be part of the MP of HL2 because valve haven''t given any details away about the MP side of HL2.
"Ready when it's ready" is a good thing when a company is actually making the game better all around... not just in the graphics department. If tradition serves Doom3 will just be another game to showcase their engine... no REAL plot. The games of course sell well, so I guess ID is happy cause they're making oodles of money. I personally think ID could learn from Valve.
And on the TF2 note, I think Valve realized it would be hard to sell a purely online game in the style of TF2. And they have confirmed it is still being worked on, so I agree with the comments above about it being released for HL2 (along with DOD2 and CS2).

I don''t really give a fuck when it comes out. It will probably be just another "let''s just run arround killing shit" travesty, but with better graphics.
I think Id put a lot of effort into making their crappy, mind-numbingly boring games.

My guess is that it will be out in time for Christmas, the game looked very complete in the latest E3 video...
I think it''s unfair to iD to compare Doom 3 to Duke Nukem, we haven''t heard or seen anything from Duke in a long time, and its surprising that the game is still in development. What ever engine they were using bound to be out of date by now (I think it was the original Unreal engine), so perhaps the delay has been caused by upgrading that...if so that just sounds like very poor management of the game''s development...
iD has ALWAYS said their games will be done when they are done, and they have always delivered so far, and I believe their games have not lacked any less of an impact for taking that approach...they are also a privately owned company who finance their own games, and thus are under no obligation to set release dates to satisfy us all.
So hopefully by the end of this year we will all be playing Half-Life 2 and Doom 3... :-)

Don''t ya know that Doom III is just a myth spread by mass media to make us talk and dream about some game and ultimately waste our time and money.
Hey I think they''re taking their good ol time to make it 100% bug free and pirate-proof (100% bug free is another myth BTW, and the only anti-piracy method that id got to work was using online keys, more on that L80r). It was rumored that this might be Carmack''s last project at id, n that he wants to go out wiff a bang. So the publishers (can''t carmack publish it himself by now?
) are giving him more freedom. Plus, they got a 3 block long line of companies waiting to drop off "a 1/4 of a million dollars" in silver briefcases to license the engine. It doesn''t matter when the game releases, there''s so much hype that even if you licence the engine and just mention that your game uses the "Doom III engine", you''re gonna sell games. N alot of peoples that played the leak are already saying they''re gonna buy it no matter what (/me raises hand). Here''s a laugh: 4.5 of 5.0 stars w/ 37 reviews for a game not even released yet. Ya''ll remember when Amazon had the release date of June 31st or something, and let you reserve it fer $50? I uh, I guess they got caught with their foot in their mouth and hands in our pockets.
I think, this is gonna be the most popular game or at least engine in history (it was rumored that the alpha leak was a plot by ATI to sell more 9700''s; I think it worked).
BUUUT, about D3. Isn''t it only single player? I heard a rumor that the multiplayer version would be sold as an expansion!!! So, how is he gonna prevent piracy now? You can''t use the old online key trick and that seems to be the only thing that works now a days. With something as popular as D3...just say that there''d be alot of people workin 24/7 on it. I''ll bet that they could sell the anti-piracy protection with their engine if it worked. Bout the multi-player modders, can you get D3-SP to play a multiplayer mod or do you gotta buy both the SP & MP versions for $100!!! AND (this is a big and, thus the caps lock) how much longer do you gotta wait for the MP version to be released? If it takes another 6 months, and the SP version got only 30-45 hours of non-replayable gameplay (mult. endings would be kewl), alot of people are gonna start bit$hin or turn to HL2 & CS2.
The only release date for D3 that I heard of was mid-Nov. for consoles, n the PC version was supposed to be before that, but Carmack ain''t updated his .plan in a while. Imma buy D3-SP no matter what though.
Don''t believe it! It''s all a hype!!!!

I think the "done when its done design and release" method is a bad method for GD, and is just plain lazy.
The thing you want in EVERY industry is credibility. If the president says it will be done by Feburary 23, 2003, then it wil lbe done then.
Everytime it gets pushed back, you lose credibility. Even if you push it back months or years in advance. Nintendo is guilty of making promises and then not delivering. Its to the point that no one in thier right minds believe Nintendo when they say they''ll release something.
If a company starts losing credibility, because they keep on pushing the dates back, they are tempted to release buggy software. Its better to have something even if that something isn''t great.
The people at ID do infact give out quarters when they believe their software should be out by. They also state that they are just guessing. Its not like the software they are developing is mission critical in anyone''s business, so its not like accidently missing a quarter or two will effect anybody. The only thing that missing dates have is an effect on their credibility.
So they''re in a bind, if they release dates, and like all software companies, miss them, then they lose credibility. If they set internal dates, tell someone estimates, and then miss them, no one gets hurt. Its a win situation for ID, so I see it as a good marketing stradegy.
