I thought back to how a long time ago, I signed up for these pay-per-cilck affiliate programs where I put an ad on my site and a company would pay me like 2 cents per click or something like that. I also remember trying a chain letter thing where you would send a dollar bill to someone and you were suppose to get a lot in the mail. Now what about this-- What if I created a chain letter thing where instead of sending money, everyone has a link to an affiliate site next to their name and everyone who gets the chain letter clicks those links? Would this be a good way to leach lots of money off of affiliate programs? hehehe

Pyramid Schemes aren't legal. Just go make money the legit way.

EDIT: Had to add some emphasis.

"My friend" once made $70 off one of those ad programs, and now I'm going to share "my friend's" methods with the world. Yes, I should sell these marketing secrets, but I'm going to give this knowledge away, just because I'm such a swell guy.

Here's what you do. All you need is a little knowledge of HTML and some &#106avascript. Create a simple page with the ad. Then add an OnLoad event that opens another page with two frames. One of thse frames is the target of the ad, and the other is the original page with the ad and the OnLoad to the page with the frames. Think "recursion" here. You may want to ad an OnLoad event to the frames page that closes the window so you won't have massive amounts of windows all over the place. Think "stack overload" here.

You may also want to create a similar setup with just the ads so that the click-through rate isn't 100%, which will SURELY get your account canceled.

Yes, "my friend" let a very similar setup run for a few minutes a day for a few weeks and built up about $200 ("my friend" was on dial-up at the time so it ran fairly slowly). Then "my friend" opened another account and ran it only a little bit and got up to $70. The $200 one got shut down and "my friend" thought the $70 did too, but it didn't. Yes, a few weeks later "my friend" got a check for $70, cashed it, and used it to help pay for the computer "my friend" is sitting at now.

Now, remember, this violates most ad program's TOS, so beware. AFAIK the worst that will happen is they'll close you're account. "My friend" isn't in jail, anyways.

EDIT: BTW, prior to the dot-com crash, any idiot could get into all sorts of affiliate programs and make money. Remember those toolbar thingies that you could have showing you ads and you'd get payed $.05 per hour? All that stuff is long gone. Good luck finding an ad program that doesn't require 10000 views per month or something similar.

If you want to make money dont waste your time trying to use advertising. I did advertised and never made much money :-(
A few years ago I signed up and downloaded a program which tested the performance of webpages on different internet connections. As long as my computer was connected to the net I got paided for my computers processing time. The max money you could make a month was $45 for your processing time, basically for just leaving your computer connected to the internet and running their program. I also got paid a $1.00 for every one I refered to their service, no payout limit on referals. I never ran the processing program very much because I was on a dailup connection. I must say the company promised what they offered I got paid around $14.00 one month for just running the program. I was thinking if one of the staff members here at Gamedev.net signed up for the progam and refered gamedev.net members they could make lots of cash. Since staff members have a always-on internet connection, they could easily run the program all the time and make tons of money from the referals.

Hmm...
Eternal-Lands.com has quite a few page hits for this month:
Total Hits 178250
Total Files 115480
Total Pages 27293
Total Visits 9843
Total KBytes 3339941
Do you happen to know where can I get some money? (I am serious).

I also want to advertise on some site (buy banner space) in a few months. But I will do it directly, with the owners of the respective sites, rather than via a 3rd party company...

Why advertise with banners? How often do you notice the banner at the top of the page on Gamedev.net? The problem with banner advertising is no one notices the banners unless the person viewing the website gets bored; also some people have software to elimate banner ads. I could be wrong but...you pay every time your banner is displayed on someone''s website, if no one click on the banner you just lose money. The best advertising for a website is to buy keywords on google.com Why? Lets say you bid on the keyword "hunting supplies" for $0.04. If someone searches for "hunting supplies" your website link will be displayed at the top of the google search engine results; because you hold the highest bid for that keyword. If someone clicks the link to your website you pay $0.04; if no one click the link you pay nothing. If a person clicked the link to your website there is a good chance they will buy stuff from your website. If you advertise with search engines, you can target your audience more effectively than with banners.

I don't plan to pay per view, or per click. I want to pay per month. That is, the webmaster puts my banner on their site for a month, and I pay them a certain ammount of money, no matter how many views or clicks that banner generated. Also, I did click on a few gamedev.net banners, and on other banners that seemed interesting. The whole 'secret' is to have a targeted advertising. I plan to advertise on mpogd.com (that's where most of the players come anyway) and on some comic websites.
But the google thing is a good idea, I'll have to look into it.

As for software that blocks banners, most of them just blocks the hosts of well known advertising sites. And since my banner will be hosted on my site, or on the targeted site, there should be no problems.

Contact Gamedev and place your ad with them :-) Also, I can sell you add-space as well. I don''t know if you will find it worthwile though. My site ain''t that big. According to PHP-Nuke I get between 5000 and 20000 unique pageloads per month. I''m almost up to 7000 this month.

As for making money with ads: Get some good referrer programs or afilliate programs like amazon.com (5% for every item sold, not great though), iPowerWeb (US$ 65 per item sold) and the like.
