Is it me or is all of TechTV (read: Screen Savers) formatted like an AOL ad? I can't stand the "youthful" trendwhores who get on screen, explain how they are "righteous" "hackers" and then show you how to download the new google toolbar and make obvious statements about what they clearly stole from yahoo news etc. [edited by - kordova on July 21, 2003 7:13:48 PM]

That bad huh? I never watched TechTV because I just don't have it on the box. Do you have to be a digital subscriber to get it or what? Their website has been helpful sometimes when I needed to lookup a quick Linux command reference.

Not the channel itself (which I get as part of a digital cable, internet package). Just the show Screen Savers which seems to be the flagship show of TechTV.

I used to watch that channel a fair bit, don''t anymore though. It used to be that Screen Savers was the more "advanced" show, while Call for Help was for complete noobs. I never encountered any so called "hackers" on the show ... normally when they had guests they were regular celebritys (well celebritys that weren''t very popular, so they could actually get them on the show) or it was someone who a more technical person would find interesting: they once had this scientist guy working on nanotechnology come in. It was fairly interesting.

I think they are just catering to a greater general audience from what you guys are saying. Heck, the greater the size of an audience will mean more bucks and the producers won''t ignore that fact.

Yeah... the day the show starts catering to the hardcore geeks is the day the show gets cancelled.

Maybe public access is the only route, or the local college channel. Unless most people become a hardcore geek as the years go by. Screwed.

I first liked how TSS wasn''t afraid to use the word "hacker" when talking about a real hacker, but now every other word on TechTV is "hack". Hack your TiVO, hack your XBOX, hack your Wi-Fi, Kevin Rose is such a hacker. God dammit. They''re just using "hacker" as a catch-phrase. It seems like we now have TWO ends of the spectrum of "hacker" abuse. We have the people that think hackers are the devil, and we have people who are calling themselves "hackers" because they followed a step-by-step guide on installing some software into their xbox. Whoop dee fucking doo.

Ilike the ScreenSavers. It''s the only show where I actually got to SEE the Minibosses.

Used to watch TSS. Now if it''s on, it''s just background noise. There was one point when I actually did find out neat stuff on that show. I do enjoy it when Michio Kaku shows up though.

At the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, does anyone else here watch X-Play just to stare at Morgan?

Dammit... I haven''t seen TechTV in a long while... I loved it.

Slightly on-topic, I was just going to bed a month or so ago and was just turning the TV off at like 3:00 am. I hit the wrong button, and it went to some local community channel. It was some show all about COM! The thing was teaching how to use it. I was blown away. However, I never got the name of the show or anything before hitting the sack. I never saw it again.
