Fuel Crunch Leads to Rent-A-Corpse Scam Two Zimbabwean mortuary workers have been arrested on charges they rented out corpses to motorists to enable them to take advantage of special fuel preferences given to hearses. Zimbabwe''s state-owned Herald newspaper reported on Saturday that a mortician and an assistant at a public hospital were arrested on Thursday and would soon appear in court on charges of violating dead bodies. The two are accused of running a racket under which they sold fake burial orders to motorists who then took the corpses and transported them to service stations. That allowed them to jump long queues to fill their tanks. After buying the fuel they returned the bodies in their coffins to the mortuary, the newspaper said.
WHAT THE HELL?!

What''s your point, Mith? You''re shocked that some people would stoop to renting out corpses to motorists desperate to get some fuel in their cars? Have you ever been in a queue for gas - and I don''t mean some measly, 2-hour US-style, "OMFG! gas is going up by 2 cents!" queue, but a get-there-before-dawn, spend-the-whole-fucking-day-there-and-only-get-20-liters queue?

Well, now you know.

Actually I''m unaware of what you speak of. Since you''ve at least been on the same continent, and I''ve never even been close, please tell more.

(I can do without any sarcasm, by the way, I''m genuinely ignorant on the subject and would appreciate more input)

Life in some parts of the world is genuinely tough. My mom has a long-time friend from France, a professor of the Yoruba language (spoken in south-western Nigeria and bits of other places), so she comes to Nigeria fairly regularly - at one point, when she was writing her French-Yoruba dictionary - every year.

For an oil-producing nation, Nigeria has a terrible distribution infrastructure. Between often faulty or sabotaged refineries, hoarding distributors and the fact that it''s often more lucrative to sell the oil products on the black market, fuel scarcities aren''t uncommon by any stretch of the imagination. During one such scarcity, this friend of my mother''s went with someone to queue for gas for her car. She saw people apparently content to spend the entire day mostly standing around their vehicles, talking, laughing, eating, drinking... I''m sure she was horrified at the waste of it all - the people who should have been at work but were queueing instead, as well as those who should have been at work but will claim to have been queueing! She couldn''t stand it.

Often, during such scarcities, petrol stations (ie, gas stations) will arbitrarily raise prices to black market levels, or ration quantites (eg 20L per vehicle). They may issue numbers to the cars in line at a certain time and then attempt to fuel them in order, but a mix of the demand and various semi-civilized elements often leads to chaos. Naturally, these are thriving conditions for all sorts of small- to medium-scale corruption, dishonesty and graft. You can easily queue for days at various stations without getting a drop of fuel into your vehicle (in many third world countries - and I hate that term, "third world" - drivers are familiar with a technique where they switch their engines off but leave the ignition in the on position and coast the vehicle along in an attemp to save gas).

Given all this, some kind of pretense to give you primacy in obtaining fuel becomes expected. Many people rely on friendships or family (eg, "my uncle owns a gas station!"). Those who don''t may try to bribe a station proprietor or fuel pump attendant to fill their container first, which they can then take off to pour into their cars - or sell on the black market at profit! In that light, the hearse trick is hardly spectacular.

It''s about time they got some use out of those corpses.
