PHP is a server side scripting language; you write scripts which generate html to produce web pages ''on the fly''.
You don''t need a compiler, but you do need a webserver that supports php to use this. I recommend you check out SitePoints tutorial on getting php up and running on a server so that you can learn this technology; there are other tutorials, but this one is very well written.

I''m not exactly sure what I need so...yeah....
There are only three things you need:
1. Knowledge of PHP (I.E. how to script in the language)
2. Notepad (or any text editor for that matter)
3. A webhost that allows PHP scripting. For really big things a MySQL database would also kick ass.

Wasn''t sure if you were posing as a n00b or really were what clueless about PHP. Have you tried php.net? Its shock full of info about the language, being official site for it and all. Its not a terribly difficult language to learn and its very, very affective and very, very free

I downloaded Php versions 3.0 and 4.3 but the install programs weren''t recognised. HELP!
Are you installing it on your computer because your computer is going to be a server or are you trying to install it on your computer for other reasons? All I can say for this is that maybe you should see PHP.Net because they have a great deal of installation tutorials and such.

What do you mean 'not recognized' ?
I installed php parser on my comp a while ago, no problems at all!
Edit:
Of course you can access php files without a parser, but then they are not more useful than plain html files...

Actually, there is a PHP compiler. But it costs money (a lot). I forgot it''s name, but it''s Zend Something.

For creating PHP files on your PC you need:
1. PHP knowledge. Get it from PHP.net
2. Notepad (or a similar program)
For viewing PHP files on you PC you need:
1. PHP parser from PHP.net (just take the latest stable version)
2. A webserver. Apache or Abyss. Abyss is easier to setup. Both are freeware. On the site of the Abyss webserver is discribed how to add PHP support to the webserver.
I hope this helped you.
