With so many tools available to the open source community as of now, why isn''t there a really good open source game engine. There are many good free C++ compilers, OpenGL, OpenAL. Why doesn''t someone take the initiative, there is absolutely no shortage of brains, and that''s just from the kind of help and support I have received from these forums. This site should be encouraging people to work towards the creation of a really amazing open source game engine. Thanks for your time.

Lost somewhere in here you'll find a couple of engines that are worth to bee seen.

Edit: heh, I noticed the search feature...

did you looked up some of the entries there? There are AWESOME projects listed there, and they are not just isolated thinguies, they are entire communities of development.

Just because they don't apear on TV it doesn't mean they aren't good.

look at this for example:

Object Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine (OGRE)

Open Dynamics Engine (ODE)

Again we have isolated entities. To me it is strange that the sites that deal with game development don''t encourage the creation of a really good game engine. You say that these don''t necessarily appear on tv, and I say why can''t they?

There are two good open source engines that I can think of off the top of my head.

Genesis3D (It is becomming slightly outdated, but still an amazing engine for what it can do.) Available at http://www.genesis3d.com

Destiny3D the modern counterpart of Genesis3D. This engine is still in development, but useable now. The engine has some very promising features, will work with OpenGL and Direct3D, though I have personally only worked with the D3D driver with it. You have to pay for access, but youhave full access to the source code, and the engine cost is very cheap, less than $100. Available at: http://www.destiny3d.com

I don''t understand what you mean by "isolated"..

I guess by isolated I mean I see an engine that is good at one thing but not another, I always thought a game engine is supposed to have all the necessary features in it to create any sort of game, at least a good game engine anyway.

Well, I think that''s not neccesarily true. The Uneral/Quake engines are thought to make FPS games, and they suffer lots of modifications when used for making games, like Deus-Ex for example.

And while we're at it, why don't you take the initiative and create one?

You might want to check out libGDN (yes, GDN stands for gamedev.net) I don''t have the link, but you can probably find it if you search the forums.
