I just had one of those "wow" moments when everything made sense (for those who read my question about terrain texturing). I can simply have an index buffer for each texture and render things that way. However, somewhere in the dark damp caves of the internet I saw some article (one of those nVidia/ATI ones I believe) say to treat index buffers the same as vertex buffers. Does this also mean that SetIndices is as slow or almost as slow as SetStreamSource?

Index buffers usually contain less data than vertex buffers.
However, they must eventually be uploaded to the graphics card (AFAIK), just like geometry.

Usually you save in duplicate vertices much more than you lose uploading indices.
