well, i finally bought a book about 3D programming. I thought it would be harder than this. the only problem is that i cant seem to find this freeware software that the book mentions. its called "Midnight Modeler" i think its like a CAD program, only is exports a special kind of file that the engine that comes with this book uses. by the way, the book is called "3D Game Programming with C++" by John De Goes. it must be kind of old...because it doesnt use DX or OpenGL...it has examples for engines like Quake (the orignial Quake) and DOOM.

Looks like you bought this book:

Instead of this book:

The "Cutting Edge" series is older and you might have trouble finding that program (if you search long enough on the web it'll turn up though...it's popular enough). Have you checked the web site for the book? As SHilbert pointed out, the Midnight Modeler is without a homepage at present (although it is still listed in most software archives).

About the second book: It's a fairly complete DirectX reference and comes with several decent DirectX wrapper classes, but that's it. It offers absolutely no additional insights. The author should have titled his book "(insert corny adjective here) DirectX Reference". What he did by inserting the keywords "3D Game Programming" was just plain wrong. To make it worse, the CD comes with the source files that are already in the book. There is no complete project, not even a runnable program. There are also several out-of-date demo programs (e.g. Cool Edit '96, DirectX 7 SDK) that one could obtain off the Internet for free.

Yeah, I was very disappointed with the second book. It seems like it was thrown together in less than a month, and I think he copied most of the book from the DXSDK help. Also there isn't any D3D code on the CD, it's all DDraw.
