Ok, I want to get in to server side programming but I know very little about it. I would like to learn how to develop things with CGI and the like. Where should I start. P.S. My only solid foundation is Visual Basic allthough I know java a little.

A good beginners language to CGI is php.

You can find tutorials on it at: HTML Goodies,
Da holy Goat (this is NOT goatse)
The Evil Twin.

(Just note that all three of those articles have their little discrepancies, and I probably should fix mine. I am just lazy, that is all)

There is also one a htmlgoodies on Installing PHP

If you know VB then I would learn ASP.
It is based on VB and does scripting and DB access well.
You can get free ASP hosting at www.brinkster.com.

Brinkster Sucks... however, I have heard pretty good reviews for Domain DLX

edit, oh and decent set of resources can be found at the Evil Twin.

Doesn''t domain dlx have popups?
Brinkster doesn''t.

I don''t know why everybody hates popups.
1) It is a free service--it needs to make money somehow
2) Get a popup suppressor, or use a browser that suppresses popups.

Again, I am only basing my suggestion on second hand information. I''ve heard some not too bad reviews on domain dlx, in comparison to brinkster.

(Maybe I just should have stayed quiet on this matter)

I use brinkster for my sites...except timnetworks.net

Learn ASP. PHP is nice too...once you know one language, you can go to the other with no problems.

You can also use Python for CGI. It includes packages for doing CGI. It doesn't seem as fast as the other suggestions, but it's still fun to do.

Just note, that afaik, with Python, CGI requires a lot of reinventing the wheel. (of course a lot of sites on Perl CGI make it look like that too...)
