Just wondering... what''s the general opinion on FF8?

It''s a quality game, though not as good as FF7 when it comes to story & gameplay. FF8''s graphics are WAY better than FF7''s, but that''s not the most important thing in games.

I was the one around my school that started the "I hate FF8" discussion at my lunch table, but I'm a hippocrite really. I do so love FF8 for so many reason, the only thing I dislike now about FF8 that I am replaying it through is the ease of the final boss and the entire final stage(dungeon, area, whatever) and the draw and stock, which was time consuming, but still awesome. I like it and FF7 nearly the same.

FF8 is good and all, but I think more time could have went into the storyline. FF7 had the most amazing storyline I''ve ever experienced, it was great how they had the expanding plot (i.e. we''re blowing up reactors, we''re saving energy, we''re fighting Shinra, we''re fighting Sephiroth, we''re saving the world from a giant meteor...etc) It gives the feeling of an overwhelming experience. FF8 was getting there, but not quite the same. I still like it though. One thing, I don''t like how some monsters stopped giving exp, and no exp from bosses...a lower encounter rate would be nice too. The graphics were great! And the cinematics
Thank god for Maya! Well, there''s my opinion, good, but not the best.

It''s okay, but not nearly as good as 7.
Good stuff
-Better graphics
-Smoother transitions
-Solid translations
-No plot holes
Bad stuff
-Just wasn''t as fun
-Left you with no clue as what to be doing many times {BIG NO NO!}
-Euro-style everything {it just gets annoying}
-Less imaginative encounters/battle setups
Okay, 8 took it''s plot line heavily from 2{4jap}. Kind of good, but it felt too much like rehash.

You think it got it''s plot from 2? that is pretty dang interesting, how do you figure? And I don''t mean this sarcastic or flame-like
WARNING! FF8 SPOILER ENCLOSED!
Well, it''s a bit more obvious at the end than the beginning, so I''ll start there. The final ''dungeon'' in 8 strips you of all abilities. Going to the Land of the Summoned Monsters in 2 stopped any of your armored party members from moving. Both games had monsters on the moon that would converge making it {the moon} look red. I know there''s a lot more in common, but I haven''t played in a while so it''s kind of fuzzy.

ahhh, I see now. But overall a good plot, jsut i really hate the draw stock system, it''s very unique in that you can get 6000 HP by level 35, but its jsut so tiresome.

I played through both(a couple times I think) and I liked ff8 better. The dissipointments I had with 7 were this(even though it was so revolutionary). There was so much hype, I was waiting for that game for it seemed like 2 years. Of course some of my freaky friends were attempting to play through the japanese version of the game. They would spill me the story when I didn''t want to know and show me CG(like when a particular person gets killed). After like a year later they translated it and by then I was not as hyped up about it.
I guess this is one of the reasons I liked 8 better then 7 but their''s many more. It puzzles me 7 is liked better. I liked the story in 8, but they went a little overboard on the love thing. When you went back in time and saw yourself as a scared child, I felt like I was looking at myself as a child. It was really trippy the way that makes you feel. Also I liked the battle''s and battle engine better. A liked the way you equiped the GF''s and their ability''s as opposed to the materia way in 7.
People have told me they didn''t like being able to draw spells in ff8. I liked this but I guess some found it either too easy to stock up, or too much of a pain to fully stock up to 100 which did waste a lot of time.
Hey and what''s up with ff10? I just heard about it, I think it''s for Playststation 2, but what happened to 9?

FF9 is still coming out but for the Playstation. It is the last one with a single digit so they are taking it back to its roots. It is set in old times, with castles, socery, and such, and the airships are just like FF2. The story will probably be rehased with some new stuff, and something new I hear about it is that instead of limit breaks, when you reach you''re limit you go into a trance and do whole new attacks for a limited time. Characters are super deformed again. They are going back to the theif, dragoon, black mage kind of thing where each person has their own abilities. That is all I''m gonna say on that.
FF10 is coming out on the PS2, it isn''t playable online, but will be able to access the online strategy guide through the ps2. FF11 however is gonna be fully online, and that is that.
I think that FF8 was incredibly easy at the end of the game if you had all the gfs.

bravo! good choice!
I think FF8 is marginally better, it terms of storyline. It took be a little while to get involved, but I eventually found myself caring more about Squall and Co. than Cloud and Co.
Yeah, but didn''t that make him a more dynamic character? I think in FF8 they were more alive, more real than they were in FF7. Their personalities were much better in FF8 than FF7 too.

Took a while, though didn''t it? Squall comes off like a real jerk early on.
$0.02
Yeah, in fact I renamed him TIJ {The Insensitive Jerk} he he
I disliked FF8. I didn''t enjoy the story at all! I found it to be a huge bore, and I found the characters not interesting to the least degree. Squall wasn''t bad, but why was he such a dick? Oh *boo-hoo*, he''s a scared little child and some crap happened to his sister- that doesn''t force him to be a prick to everyone else.
I didn''t like the story because it didn''t "go" places. There was hardly any exploring in the game at all. Often times it would be, go here, check around the city a bit (this is where the minimal exploring comes into place), and then be sent off to the next place to reveal the next bit of boring, grueling piece of plot. I enjoyed FF7 much, much better because the story was intriguing. I played every moment of my free time to find out what linked Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth- as well as save the world! The game was full of emotion, which was found in FF8, but more in a pansy-like manner. I didn''t fall for the Rhino (yes, I know I left the ''a'' out) chick, unlike Squall, so I guessed that hampered the atmosphere the game tried to create.
The graphics were pretty cool in 8, but I disliked the ''realistic'' style. When I play an RPG, it is to escape my real world and venture into a fantasy land. FF8, at times, made me lose that feeling.
Please don''t flame me if you disagree, just post your argument and lets get on with our lives- it''s only a game.

I know i have praised it a lot, but I have never expressed why I like FF7 more than FF8. Number one is mainly because of one of your points, Fredric. Little exploration. You never get to go to some of the places on that wonderful worldmap. It was huge and had a lot of potential, but you never got to walk to world as much as FF7. This was mainly because in FF7 you HAD to go everywhere to get the good Chocobos you needed for breeding. Which was another reason that FF7 was better, it''s super side quest of Chocobo racing and breeding was WAY better than the card game.
Finally, I liked how in FF7 the characters looked better in the battles than in the real game, and in FF8 i was sorry to find that the game was bad looking in the battles.
That is everything I found wrong with it, but other wise i love it
