Hi there , I am developing a hobby 3D FPS engine . I am confused about which maps should i load to maximize my learning. I think .bsp would be great but i want to do all the culling and occlusion and collision detection myself(anything else left??). After that maybe i will look for lightmaps etc.... Can i still do it with .bsp?? Those levels are sexy though. Are there any other formats which i shud try ?? THANX a lot for ur comments On course to my first FPS engine , zoooooom

imo Bsp-trees suck really. They may be good for doom-style levels and caverns and such. I crumbled on bsp-trees when trying to do a outdoor map with quake2 engine ("the game is old and supports such grahics with older computers. then it must support atleast a nice big valley map").
read the octree articles here at gamedev they are imo better
and then again i have never done anything but ripped/copy pasted a terrain engine.

They''re really well documented. So even if they are not the best sort, you''re going to find A LOT of information online to help your through.
