I did a little experiment last night-- I deleted explorer.exe and replaced it with notepad.exe! Rebooted the comp, and it did what I thought it would- no windows shell/desktop/taskbar, but notepad fired up instead! I ctrl+alt+deleted, then ran MSN messenger, but strangly, on my buddy list, none of the people''s nicknames appeared, only their email addresses. How would I solve this issuse if I decided to write my own "explorer.exe" shell?

Would it be possible to get Gnome running under Windows? And I don''t mean in a seperate little "virtual" desktop whatever, I mean GNOME on WINDOWS! That''d be cool.

Not sure about Gnome, but you can get gtk for windows (the toolkit that Gnome uses)

What''s the problem? Make that shell as any windows problem, then edit the register and make it start that instead of explorer.
