Blaster Virus!!! HELP!!!

My nice new PC has been infected with the virus. I''m having to learn about it by using the school internet. I''ve heard there''s an anti virus out already and will try and get it. If it works, I want to make sure it doesn''t happen again. What is a reliable firewall or whatever to protect againt this kind of thing. Symantec has a fix for it, but once you remove it is ESSENTIAL you download the patch so you don''t get it again.
